Dell CEO Kevin Rollins took a pot shot at Apple Computer in an interview with C/net, calling the iPod just a fad. You know, like the Sony Walkman. (Psst, Kevin. The Walkman has been around for 20 years. Not exactly the Pet Rock of consumer electronics).

Apparently, Sony sold over 340 million Walkmans [http://tinyurl.com/4nn7x] in the past 25 years. That’s quite a telling figure…since people are starting to think that iPod sales, at 10 million, are running out of steam. http://tinyurl.com/5g7o5

According to Needham and others, Apple is expected to ship 23-26 million iPods in 2006. As Matt notes, some analysts worry that sales of Apple’s iPod will run out of steam. 340 million Walkmen were sold. I’m betting that, for many reasons, an equal or greater number of iPods will be sold. There must be a methadone factory near Rollins house because his comments make no sense. More likely is that he doesn’t get it. I would guess that is why Dell has hitched, no transmorphed, its music model to MS; they think MS’ size will be enough. But if you just don’t understand what’s going on, you can’t dominate. Dell should get with the program and do what HP did.
