Looking up people by name remains free. In fact, in August we added the capability to find them even if they are not in your network.

Contacting people within your network also remains free. InMail is the way to to contact people you don’t know, but who you want to get to know, but to whom you can’t get introduced.

Users who want to receive as many inbound inquiries as possible (and are not so concerned about quality of inbound inquiries) will also be able to set up the equivalent of a toll-free number–more on that next week.

Seeing as how now linkedin has made even looking up people who went to the same school as you on a “fee basis” i.e. you pay $10 a pop, you may wish to consider a free option instead.
