Silicon Graphics, a valley legend, files for bankruptcy

Silicon Graphics, a maker of high-performance computers that has been on the skids for a while, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (subscription required).

SGI builds desktop workstations and server systems that offered high-end graphics, but has failed to adapt.

Stock trading at 32 cents.
