Hi Matt,

The Venture Intelligence figures quoted in USA Today was for the entire Private Equity spectrum. The VC segment (early- and growth-stage investments) accounted for $482 million across 52 deals in 2005 (compared to $295 million across 27 deals in 2004).

VC's like most other people follow the herd mentality. Someone made an investment in travel site to begin with(makemytrip) everyone else started investing there. It is only on this space there is overpouring of VC money ( which I totally agree is way too much)

But in other spaces there is nothing interesting going on here. I try to keep my eyes & ears open to all startup related stuff but believe there is nothing going on in India.

The Tech/Startup scene in india is so dull & uninspiring compared to Europe & US and other parts
of Asia that to call it bubbly is such a baloney.

Re first comment: Since circa early 2005, Ram has consistently been reluctant to participate in profile articles or extensive interviews, and has his reasons for laying low. We've written about him in the past, though. Do a search on siliconbeat for "Ram Shriram."

Interesting comments by Ram.But yes it seems odd that his point person in India is running a Co, screening deals, representing kpcb.

While he may smarter than the i-bankers peers in other VC's Cos, he is being equally ambitious in trying to be all things to all, instead of concentrating on what he does best - find and nurture investees!

Please do an extensive interview with him if at all possible - it would be very fascinating to get his perspectives on Google - the start up versus the Icon.

Digg-ed this to share his story with others - not many people know about him
