NASA Ames Research Center has played a pivotal role in the growth of Silicon Valley. Finding ways to leverage its resources with innovative groups outside of NASA can only serve to amplify what Silcon Valley does best - jumping the next technology gap.

But it is a hard road for a public/private partnership to move towards a knowledge-based economy effectively. And while the potential is great, execution is the key.

The key to NASA's success will be in how they use virtual services to promote education and research. Imagine what an educational YouTube could do to inspire innovation in our youth! This is an exciting vision that reaches beyond conventionally investable businesses.

Virtual services get around many of the problems encountered in these public/private partnerships otherwise too fragile from the start. Resource utilization, cost of outreach to the public, and speed to engage with the public all are enhanced beyond prior older approaches that involved more physical involvement - like in the 60's when our local high schools would get a visit from the "NASA van". The creative use of virtual services will allow the "NASA van" to visit high schools globally, utilizing the global knowledge base to enhance our economy and communities. The rewards are great.

This is an exciting time for NASA. We all look forward to their inspiration and leadership.
