Hmm. Microsoft went after Netscape in no small measure because Andreesen started talking about including API "hooks" in the perimeter of the Netscape Web browsing software, which would render the operating system environment essentially irrelevant. Now that idea has been leapfrogged, with the apps themselves being accessed through the Web interface (including mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.). Despite this ability, MS marketshare hasn't changed; we're still locked into using Word, etc. I would argue that most users will never trust Web based apps for critical applications for two reasons: security and network availability. The browser OS concept (and Sun's Java thin client concept) are in many ways a throwback to the old days of dumb terminals; it's not clear to me that there's a lot of consumer demand for that...

The eXo Platform Inc has introduced at JavaPolis its next Portal and ECM generation (both in their 2.0 alpha) that aims to use AJAX UI and Java backend (Portlet API and JCR) to simulate an true Web Operating System that fits the Enterprise needs.

People can still create dynamic layout with an enhanced drag and drop but pages can also have a true desktop page a la Mac OS. Default and Mac skins are available, a Vista one is on the way.

The entire ECM functionnalities are shown in a real File explorer that will make the ECM use much easier and a natural choice for people.

I don't understand the need for an operating system. I have all my Google apps (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Spreadsheets, etc.) set up as separate home page tabs in Firefox. Every time I open Firefox, all the tabs open and I am ready to work. Switching is pretty much instantaneous.

Thanks Steve, but you haven't explicitly addressed the Handelsblatt piece about the split in Germany, and the reasons for it. Guess you're saying it was inaccurate?

Hi Matt. Re. Technorati and Edelman, that's not quite correct. We are using the European sites through January but ceased work on Asia. There's more <a HREF="http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/12/technorati_edel.html" rel="nofollow">on my blog</a>. Happy New Year.
