I read that it takes more power to show black on your screen than white. Is that true? I'm an electrical engineer and I'm not sure myself. Check out this sick graph of spending on the Iraq war Vs. spending on renewable energy

A couple of academic papers have recently tackled the same subject, showing very high estimates of embodied carbon.
Daniel – the papers I mention are also a good source of info on the subject in general, if you want to dig in more (though they are not free ).
I also have a few related posts on my blog, from Feb 2007. They are probably easier reads, though far less informative. (I was just trying to understand the issues myself.)
