Geothermal projects have not changed in 30 years, due to the Department of Nuclear Archeology (DOE) investing only guaranteed-to-fail pittances in it. ($2m/yr)

But there has been a lot of work in the last 30 years in "Enhanced Oil and Gas Recovery" which is directly applicable to geothermal. Oil used to gush out of the ground in Texas- now you have to work hard to squeeze blood from that stone. With economic gas drilling more than 6 miles deep in the Gulf, the additional work to prove out geothermal is slight.
And the eastern part of the US lacks renewable energy options except for Geothermal. Perhaps oil-services giant Halliburton can redeem itself by being instrumental in providing a major reduction in US greenhouse gas emissions.

good piece matt. i kind of rushed off my item on altarock, so just want to reiterate that petty told me the company will not be a geothermal "project" or "production" company -- but rather will be developing some sort of technology for project/production companies. in other words, it will be creating something "new" -- to the point of commenter steve above.

What is new about this?? Geothermal has been aggressively pursued in California for decades. My uncle, an incredibly brilliant engineer, ran a large geothermal company for many years. It sounds great, but the engineering is not easy. There may be some technical breakthough that has solved some of the inherent problems, hence the VC investment. Else it may be that this is just more template investing -- now being applied to the green sector. I am all for geothermal btw and wish all these folks the best.
