Tom: Actually, they do have offices in other places — especially Google. They’ve got one in Chicago, as it happens, and a couple internationally. Silicon Valley is still the center, though. It’s complicated for these companies (not to mention startups) to move away from the tech centers, much as they might like to plunk down in the middle of nowhere like Wal-Mart.

RE Silicon Valley engineering talent getting ever scarcer – Why don’t these companies consider opening developemnt centers in less expensive places, say Chicago for example. The valley is too expensive to live in. There is talent without using the H1 program you just have to be creative about how you find it.
