This sounds like OpenSocial container variant... everyone is openning their API's now. Not sure if it's as stimulating as it sounds.. let's wait and see.

Although Yahoo Games has offered something like this for a while, Meebo is bringing something potentially very new to the table.

1. The games are now cross-protocol (it's not just between aol users, as aol/wildtangent games go, or just between yahoo users, there's no need to install anything, etc.) Essentially, all the reasons why Meebo itself is popular.

2. Depending on how they roll this out, the potential for "small time" developers to release games on a web-based network could spur on many interesting applications, considering the low barrier to entry (see iPhone apps).

So sure, it's not really a novel idea, but it's execution certainly is different. We'll see whether those differences will actually matter in the coming days.

Meebo is definitely not the first to integrate games into IM. Many of the existing IM clients have supported this for some time.

But what excites me most of Meebo's implementation is that it allows you to invite any of your IM friends to a game regardless of what IM network they are using, and most importantly, regardless of whether they are current Meebo users. This ability should effectively drive significant growth for Meebo, pulling in new users to enjoy a game with their friends.

I'm excited to see the results.

While casual gaming is a natural extension for an IM platform, Meebo is by no means a pioneer in this space. Yahoo Games has long had this feature.

I'm also not sure I agree with "playing games with friends is generally more desirable than playing with strangers." Often the fun is in playing with strangers. In any case, there is no reason casual gaming websites like Big Fish Games can't replicate this feature.

Now replicating the growth in user base, that's another story.
