Google’s relentless growth in search, Microsoft’s decline

google-relentless.jpgEveryone knows Google dominates search, and it’s getting old to report on the barrage of statistics showing Google’s continued rising stock price, rising revenues, profits and expansion into other fields.

But Google’s continued momentum in search engine market share is truly remarkable. Month after month, Google continues to climb, and that means advertisers are ever more eager to flock there to spend dollars. All the while, Microsoft’s search engine share continues to plunge. It looks like even Ask will one day overtake Microsoft. Yahoo looks stable at best. At what point will Google’s market share peak? The latest stats from Hitwise show Google accounted for 65.10 percent of all U.S. searches in December.

  • It will be useful to know the actual ad revenue numbers as well for each of them from search. MS will have to acquire Yahoo to even compete purely on search. On the other hand, the future might not be in ad revenue from search but from ad revenue through social networks as partly proven by Facebook.
  • That is all about to change...look out Sergy and Larry!

  • @Pran,

Facebook didn't successfully prove anything other than it is problematic to violate user privacy with poorly thought out ad solutions. I agree that other sources of revenue will emerge that aren't driven by search, but it is doubtful that Facebook will be a leader in this regard.
  • Dont quite agree with pran on future of advertising shifting towards networks. Search not only has high usage but is in some way provides much more targetted ads and reduces wastage. If I want to by an LCD tv then to know prices and reviews i'll first google it and thats an opportuinity for advertisers which Facebook dosent present as of now. Advertising in future will become more and more targetted and the best platform would servive which looks to be google as of now.
