Eric: First of all, as a member of DNF, I want to congratulate you on the sale. While I realize Bored.com is clearly a better name than YouTube.com, it’s very difficult to assign percentages of value to the domain vs. the traffic. I have no doubt that Bored.com is a 6-figure name to resellers but I still find the author’s direct comparisons to sex.com (undeveloped at time of sale) and business.com (developed at time of sale) to be rather misleading.

I was the seller of Bored.com, and I can confirm it does get 2 million visitors a month, mostly from the search engines. And, it was profitable. On the other hand, the Bored.com domain may have been worth $4 million without any site on it, unlike youtube.com which is basically a worthless domain when valued as a domain only.

Cyrus: True, although the reports I’ve seen elsewhere that it gets 2 million + uniques per month seem to be wildly exaggerated. And Moniker is in the business of selling businesses whose primary value lies in one thing — their name. Most of the notable ones are monetized in some way.

Your description under the sale of Bored.com is a bit misleading. Bored.com is a developed website with search engine traffic. Comparing it’s sale to the domain name after market just because it’s a website brokered by Moniker is a misrepresentation. The domain name Bored.com didn’t sell for 4.5M the same way the domain name YouTube.com didn’t sell for 1.6B
