Helpstream, a Mountain View, Calif. provider of on-demand collaborative customer service technology, said it raised a $8.6 million round of financing led by Mohr Davidow Ventures (MDV).

The company, formerly known as Pathworks Software, competes against companies like Parature and RightNow.

The company say it was built around the idea that a “community” is  key a component to getting customer answers to their questions faster and cheaper. The company offers an interactive check list that guides a customer through a problem resolution process, which allows an agent to intervene at any point where a customer becomes stuck or needs more help.

Additional funds came from seed investor Foundation Capital and from Roger Sippl, founder and former CEO of Informix and co-founder of Vantive.
