appleimoteIf you’ve bought an Apple computer in the past few years chances are you have one of the white remote controls that come with them (except, inexplicably, for the newest MacBooks and MacBook Pros). These remotes are great for one thing: Apple’s Front Row media center program, and are of little use to anyone who doesn’t regularly use that. Google’s Mac team hopes to change that.

Utilizing a program called iremoted, Google’s Amit Singh has created an easy way for developers to utilize the remote controls in programs they create. While this won’t turn your Mac into a Nintendo Wii anytime soon, it could make for some interesting uses with things such as mapping programs and perhaps even games.

The newest version of iremoted should work with both the Tiger and Leopard versions of OS X and Singh has released the source code for the program as well. Go make something cool.
