Do you guys know of anyone that is messing around with the idea of small pooled equity investments using the net? I think it would be interesting to have a Pledgebank.com but for funding entrepreneurial ideas.

I think Kiva demonstrates the power of citizen participation and ownership of the cause. Kiva really took off when it got picked up by the blogging community, citizens endorsing the concept to other citizens. They provided tools for people to share it easily, gift certificates, automatic emails, banners, etc. and they have never had to spend any money marketing themselves, the community does it completely on their own.

I think another factor of the genius of Kiva is their price point of $25. It is low enough that people feel they could risk $25 bucks simply to test out the idea but also high enough that it is a bit of a sacrifice that people have interest that their gift is effective. The price point has allowed a very wide segment of society to participate, from elementary school kids who pool their money, to poor college students, to wealthy professionals who can have a large portfolio of gifts.

The other element of their success is that they connect people to people so the donor and receiver have enough of a relationship, even if it is just seeing each other's picture, that people feel personally involved.

This kind of wide base of support from participatory citizens leading to organizational sustainability is exactly the model we have been documenting at Ashoka in our Citizen Base Initiative. The power of the internet has allowed Kiva to meet that goal but there are many organizations that are using the same principles on the ground in their local communities.

This is a very different mindset than the historical financing model for nonprofits, large grants from foundations, constantly asking for gifts. I think it's exciting time to watch the tide turn.
