Any idea how to unlock your phone?? My friend bough a adapter called Universal Sim to unlock his iPhone 3G . He is now using it with a German 02 card which seems to work.

iPhone in Italy will indeed sold also as prepaid for example, and I guess the same will happen in other countries, but price wouldn't be as good. 499Euros 8gb and 569 euros 16gb for prepaids and 10€/mo data plan (again for prepaids, 24months contract will most likely see a 1€ to 199€ price tag and a 29€ to 59€ monthly fee, instead).

569 euros = 880$ .. Why ? Most European countries have a hefty sales tax in place (17 to 21%), then you have customs, then you have riaa-like taxes on music-playing devices... Then of course we are way more buying power than US, so Apple is going also to profit from that raising prices.

So in the end, while I still fail to see why I am discussing such a topic on *Venture*Beat, yes I guess it would still better to pay the termination fee in the US.

Great point John, those fees were $175-$200 I believe with the original device, I have to assume they'll be more now, otherwise a lot of people may do just that.

Why head to Europe? For $600 you could certainly buy the iPhone, pay the contract cancellation fee to AT&T and then unlock it.
