Don't just rely on Meraki or a municipal wireless provider to freetheet, put up a couple devices around the place and share your internet with your neighbors and the greater community.If enough people do this then we'll really be able to 'freethenet' and support local community wireless!

Actually, you would only need 20 802.11b repeaters to cover a sq. km of street intersections where line of site is better. Let's assume we increase that by 1.5 to cover every edge between those 20 nodes — 30 boxes.

Compare that to the cost of running a cable… not to mention that 802.11N has a range of 70M and 802.11Y will go through lite concrete.

This is flawed technology – how many wifi repeaters do you need to cover 2 square miles of city? Answer: 10,000.
The range of a WiFi signal is too short to make a WiFi mesh truly workable.
