We, at Vysr, are very pleased to hear of the experimental release of Ubiquity. This further validates what we have been saying for a long time. It is the user that needs to be in charge of which applications they want to use and where to leverage the benefits of the Internet. Add in the social networking dimension as we do with RoamAbout and you have a truly user-centric model of how people use the Web.

On another note, we cannot help but be amused at the suggestion from Mr. Raskin that startups are less able to put user experience first than at Mozilla Foundation. Many investors, especially in the Web 2.0 space, probably wish their startups focused on revenue and the investors than on end user adoption! But seriously, as pointed out, Mozilla Foundation gets serious amount of funding from a company that grew as a startup focused on end user value. Just as the Mozilla based browsers themselves benefit from the large number of commercial projects that make the web browser itself useful, Ubiquity like RoamAbout also depends on other startups (Twitter for example) providing services that are very user-focused to justify their own usefulness.

Let me just say that it is not the business model that determines the value and usefulness of the product but rather the passion, the vision and the hard work that people bring to the development. We will let our products speak for themselves in terms of user-experience. All of these models are necessary and work to benefit the Web and the end user.

We look forward to seeing more from the good people at Mozilla to advance this user-centric model. It is an exciting path to be on.

Man, the stuff coming out of Mozilla Labs keeps getting better and better. I did an interview with Myk Melez of Mozilla Labs, the guy who created Snowl, and its the huge developer playground that brings so much unique innovation out of these guys. This service really looks like a very unified messaging experience, tied in with a kick-ass back end API this service is surely going to be released in a final version?
