IE 6 mobile is NOT IE 6 desktop. IE 6 mobile uses the same rendering engine as IE 7 desktop. The 6.1 update uses something between IE7 and IE8 desktop rendering.

Just a bad versioning thing… WM version numbers a little behind desktop.

The problem is that no business user will by an iPhone. The man in the street who likes to have a fashion accessory will buy an iPhone because he doesn't have to collect email on-the-go and then reconcile them with an exchange server together with calendar, contacts, notes, word docs and excel files. Try modifying you monthly sales spreadsheet on an iPhone or a RIM for example; even if you have the 3rd party application to enable you to edit the file you'll have distroyed all the formatting!

As much as certain people hate MS the truth is that the vast majority of work computers use MS OS, Servers and desktop apps. If you want to be 100% compatible then iPhone, RIM et all isn't going to do it for you (I know I'm a business user and I have a Blackberry bold sitting in my office desk gathering dust while I use my HTC Raph).

So the delayed release of WinMo7 only affects business users such as myself in that I hate the UI of 6.1 and I would like 7 NOW. Does the delay mean my company are going to switch to providing iPhones for the managers and engineers??? Hell No!!! If I need to create a specific little application for a specific purpose can I do it for an iPhone??? Hell No!!! Could I do it easily for a RIM device?? Hell No!!! Maybe it's possible for Android as it's Linux based but that remains to be seen. My point is the easy availability of development tools for Windows applications is also a factor in the decision which platform to invest in.

The easy availability of software for the WinMo platform is another big plus. I travel world-wide on business. You find me a turn-by-turn satnav application for iPhone or RIM where I can download maps for every country I happen to be visiting at the time and install it on my device?? I think you'll have a hard job finding one. On WinMo there at at least 3 that offer close to world-wide coverage and I'm sure there are more.

So to paraphrase a famous quote for business customers, “the demise of MS has been greatly exaggerated!"

I love Microsoft and the direction they're heading in with Windows Live and Windows 7, but here is no denying that they are woefully behind the times when it comes to the mobile market. I have a Blackjack II with WM6.1 and while it works for everything I need (browsing could be better) it's lacking anything that sets it above the rest. Email is dominated by RIM, Apple owns all things entertainment, and there are another hundred phones with their own OS's that do a combination of the two. The only reason I stick with WM is because I do everything through Windows (Outlook, Windows Live services, Windows OS, WMP, Mesh, etc), but if they don't start integrating all those flawlessly into their phones then I might as well switch to Android or Blackberry where at least I can do most of them really well. Microsoft has an opportunity to make something special, a device combined with software that could integrate all aspects of a person's digital life. The upcoming Windows Live updates are a big step, but if my phone is left out of the equation then there is no reason for me to stick with WM. I may be an MS die-hard, but I'm no fool and I can't wait forever.

Eric….Read the Microsoft forums, Windows 7 will no longer be a stylus driven system. It will be “Finger Friendly” hence the Gestures, Personally I like my WM device, don't see my self changing any time soon that's for sure. Although Android looks very promising. I love the fact that I can write what ever applications I want for my WM in Visual Studio. Depending on the complexity of the app, I can have it running in no time. Given I'm not making GPS Software with Maps, but simple stuff is easy. When Ifone can Remote Desktop, Check Email, Surf the web, WITH OUT THE APP STORE(what a crock of crap i want to chose and make my own apps) as flawlessly as my WM can I may…may applaud them.

THE PROBLEM IS that Microsoft did not change its UI approach from Windows to Windows Mobile and it does NOT WORK for a screens that are 2″x3″. To have a scroll bar on a phone is one of the most ignorant design concessions I have ever seen. Just try the iphone for 2 days and it will make you think your windows mobile deserves to be in a museum (yes, that includes wm 6.1). I had a wm device for over a year and waited until apple released the 3g iphone, I will never go back to wm until they change the UI approach to match a person using it on a phone.
