Swarmcast gets in on the game with streaming sports
Swarmcast, provider of a platform that allows websites to stream high-fidelity video content, launched its new service, Swarmcast for Sports, designed solely to stream live sports events online. The idea is to let major content distributors, like Major League Baseball, provide users on their websites with a television-like viewing experience.
The Minneapolis, Minn. company says this this should be good news for sports websites who have a tough time competing in a highly-fragmented field. Streaming video of sports events should drive an enormous amount of traffic, considering the overall demand for sports entertainment. Still, Swarmcast will face some competition in this area, as rivals Move Networks and Digital Fountain also support streaming of live sports (though they don’t have specific services targeting this area yet).
In addition to equipping sites with its Autobahn streaming platform, Swarmcast has built in several other tailored features, including automatic rights management so that content doesn’t violate copyright or geographic restrictions, digital rights management services and analytical tools for measuring viewership.
