Hard to see this initiative beating NVIDIA's.

Parallelizing software is tricky and very specific to the Architecture and API - so if you have already translated for CUDA why would you port to ATI's platform? And if you are just starting, why target ATI when NVIDIA has had several iterations in response to programmers' demands in the field (see their CUDA Zone), with recent additions to the API like Vote.Any and Vote.All. That must be customer-driven development: It's hard to imagine some R&D boffin dreaming that up in a room alone.

NVIDIA have a big lead.
