User feedback service RatePoint gets $10 million

RatePoint, a service that lets web site owners collect online feedback from users about products and services, has raised a $10 million second round of funding from Castile Ventures, with participation from existing investors .406 Ventures and Prism VentureWorks.

The company, based in Needham, Mass., lets publishers embed widgets on their pages asking for user feedback. Users can leave comments and ratings for a site owner to see, hopefully helping the business to make more informed decisions about what people want. The site owner can choose to display these comments publicly (user ratings and comments about RatePoint itself, pictured above).

The interface lets sites collect user contact details and includes an email marketing feature — think email lists — so the owner can follow up with additional information (spam?). It also includes customizable surveys and other features to help gather information from users. RatePoint makes money by charging a monthly subscription fee for its services.

Competitors include Get Satisfaction, a free forum-focused site, and PowerReviews, which also offers for-pay features like commenting and ratings.

Eric currently covers digital media technology and business news, especially what's happening on social networks and their platforms. He also writes and edits stories about venture capital, and lots of other stuff, too. He started at VentureBeat in the spring of 2007, half a year or so after Matt Marshall left his reporting job at the San Jose Mercury News to found the site. Eric previously cofounded a startup called Writewith, that was building editorial software for newspapers and other groups of writers. The startup didn't work out, but he learned a lot.
