Why is VentureBeat down all the time?

Many of you have noticed that VentureBeat has been down a lot recently. The site was down several frustrating hours last night and for short stints over the last few days.

We’re finding Apache is crashing in response to stuff happening at our content management system, WordPress. We’re still troubleshooting. But this comes at a time when we were already migrating to a different architecture. In the meantime, we believe we’ve found a way to minimize downtime for the time we’re still on the existing platform. So we should have smoother sailing going forward.

Thanks for your patience.

  • Looks like it took down valleywag.com too.
  • Valleywag and all the Gawker network runs on Movable Type, not WordPress.

We were thinking of switching shefinds.com to wordpress - currently we're on expression engine - not a good idea?
  • Wordpress is cool and easy to use, but can be a little buggy depending on the platform its on.

I consider myself a daily reader of this website, but mostly during the week. So, I hadn't noticed the downtime. However, I appreciate being upfront about it.
  • On what architecture you are switching on? Other blogging software? Or? This info might be helpful for other people too (what is not working in Wordpress for a high trafficked site)
  • Seconding Mircea -

What CMS are you moving to? What were your biggest Wordpress painpoints (WP is fantastic, but everything has flaws).

Wordpress works best when the Wordpress guys are hosting it.

Hmmm, perhaps you should consider a more robust Microsoft SQL architecture. I know a guy who may have a hook up to BizSpark. ;-) Can't beat free...
  • You're moving off WordPress? Shame... I could have helped you scale this thing. Anyways, any insight on what you're moving to?
  • Now is the time to seriously look at AOLserver.
