I worked for the Chronicle in HR from 2002 to 2004, and people were always either being laid off or being given buyouts. My department was poorly managed, and I'm certain that had helped to contribute to the problems.

since i became fans of many of y'all back in the merc days, any dead tree being felled makes me sad (though the merc is now a flyer that gets delivered on my doorstep every day, it seems). clearly, there is a place for great content, and deep investigative, insightful journalism. I still get my Merc, WSJ, Economist (and yeah, wired) in print form… though it'd obviously be better for them and me if they delivered me a kindle for free bundled with an annual commit. The Chron apparently loses a fortune on delivery anyhow. Must be true for all of them.

My first reaction to this was that it was likely posturing against the Northern California Media Workers Union. But it appears that contract isn't up until 6/30/2010, and when ratified three and a half years ago already gave the paper a fair amount of leverage (for instance, a no-strike clause). The agreement is here:
