I love this article. Thanks so much for breaking down the changes. I believe this is a necessary change for Facebook in recognition of the inevitable need to organize the increasing amount of information (feeds) in our lives – the reason for the rise in popularity of services like Twitter Search and Friendfeed.

Could someone please explain to me why on Earth emulating Twitter seemed like a good idea? If I wanted to “tweet” with all the OCD washouts who spend their entire waking lives over there, I wouldn't have a Facebook account. I probably wouldn't have a job, either.

Would someone kindly inform me where the ADULTS are supposed to hang out, now?

Forget putting the apps in the feed, how do you even see them? At the moment I can't figure out how to open an app unless someone first sends me a message from it.

I’m often baffled by how the recent Twitter frenzy has overlooked the brand opportunity for marketers on Facebook, along with the lack of scale for Twitter. Yes, Twitter now has 6 million users, but Facebook has 175 million! More importantly, according to Nielsen’s recent report on social networks (which we covered this week), Facebook users spend an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes on the site per-month; the highest average time per-person amongst the 75 most popular brands online.

Good overall. I am still waiting for the changes to take effect on my account though.

What I am worried about is the not-so-savvy user. I have had great trouble explaining Twitter to friends who swear by Facebook. I hope these changes bring home the message of the realtime web.

Thanks Kurt, but it was mostly Eric here, I just wrote the third segment. But as to your question, I do think that Facebook is making a run at Twitter and FriendFeed functionality, but it has such a huge audience that is has to do it slightly differently. I believe all three will continue to exist — to me, the key going forward for Facebook is Facebook Connect. That's where I think the real interesting stuff will happen, this is just a nice upgrade.

Excellent details and neat summary. I got the new home page only later today and played with it but didn't notice the “settings” options till you highlighted it in this article. I was too focused on the the “publisher”, looked like an intentional usability by design.

Wish 3rd party platform apps would also get a chance to be included in this feed based on user choice. Sorting by friends list is really useful and makes it clean.
