Lots of April Fool’s jokes — Tim O’Reilly, head of O’Reilly Media, admitted at the Web 2.0 Expo that Opera’s April Fool’s joke fooled him. The web browser company claimed you could control its new browser by making faces at it. There were plenty of other jokes too. TechCrunch has more.
Mixed reports on whether Conficker worm caused damage — Early reports suggested the fear about the April Fool’s cyber attack was overblown. But OpenDNS group reports that a half million of its users are infected.
Woz sent home from dance show — Steve Wozniak hung on for a few weeks, but his weak Tango doomed his future on Dancing With the Stars. Critics referred to his being voted off the show as euthanasia.
Fiorina considers U.S. Senate run — Carly Fiorina was booted out of HP. Her faux pas made her persona non grata with the McCain campaign. But she is seriously considering challenging Barbara Boxer for a Senate seat.
The downturn hits Sand Hill Road – The fabled office parks of Menlo Park, Calif., are now seeing lower rents and higher vacancies. The Wall Street Journal has more.
SGI sold to Rackable for a mere $25 million — The once mighty SGI created some of the coolest 3-D applications — like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park — and it had the best headquarters in Silicon Valley. Now the place is occupied by Google, and SGI has finally been put out of its misery with a sale to Rackable. Marketwatch has a retrospective.
Disney Online buys Kaboose assets for $18 million — Disney’s online media division buys the assets of Kaboose, which include Babyzone.com, AmazingMoms.com, Funschool.com and Zeeks.com. TechCrunch has more.
Yahoo Mobile launches in eight countries on 300 devices – Yahoo’s mobile applications service provides search, news, social networks and email on a bunch of mobile phones. TechCrunch has more.
Chinese game site staging a big IPO – Changyou.com, a gaming spinoff from Sohu.com, is expected to garner some excitement when it stages its U.S. IPO on Thursday. Marketwatch has more.
Intel gives up ownership of Moblin – The chip giant created the Moblin version of Linux to get its Atom processor and netbooks off the ground. Now it is handing over stewardship to the Linux Foundation in hopes of increasing usage. The Register has more.
Facebook favors its own app (kinda) — Facebook said it wouldn’t favor its own apps. As part of that, it handed its own classified application, Marketplace, off to third party classified network Oodle per some sort of licensing agreement between the two companies. Now it has slipped Marketplace into users’ bookmarks as a default.
Buzz Media trims staff – Online entertainment media company cuts 20 percent of its staff. The company has 40 sites that focus on music, celebrity and pop culture. Paidcontent has more.
