Watch it live: Kutcher vs. CNN race to a million Twitter followers

You can’t get more meta than a site that micro-blogs trends in micro-blogging. But we’re through the looking glass anyway, so here goes: Tinker.com, part of the distinguished Glam Media Network, is live streaming the Twitter race to a million followers between Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) and CNN (@cnnbrk).

Tinker.com is a micro-blogging platform itself that lets users converse about events and breaking news in real-time. How it’s different from Twitter in this respect is unclear (maybe less randomness i.e. “This burger is amazing!”), but it seems to have a sizable user base anyway. In addition to hosting discussion, it also charts trend data. In this case, it has CNN beating the Punk’d star by a pretty wide margin — a surprise turn of events if you extrapolate the battle out to serious news vs. pop culture fluff. But who wants to read that much into it?

At the time of this post, the news organization was indeed winning 970,948 to 960,797. But you don’t need me to tell you that, because you too can tap into the livestream, courtesy of Tinker, below:

You can find me on Twitter here along with fellow VentureBeatniks Eric Eldon, Dean Takahashi, Anthony Ha, Terrence Russell, Dan Kaplan and Matt Marshall. We have a VentureBeat account (for our posts) as well.

Pathetic. It's shit like this and all the #amazonfail douchebags, and the fact that it's near the top of techmeme that make so many people wonder if "social media" will ever have any utility beyond self-promotion.

Yep. It's like those people that post comments on blogs, with a link to their Twitter page. Pot, meet Kettle.

Ashton is a has been and CNN is a network nobody watches...I guess since no venture firms are investing in anything that Venture Beat has nothing else to *report* on...
