Video: How can business-to-business services benefit from social networking platforms?

Social networking platforms have created lots of new opportunities for consumer entertainment, like casual games, but what about the opportunities for businesses that serve other businesses, like Lexis Nexis and its data services? Earlier this month, I moderated a panel with a few people working on that problem at the SIIA NetGain conference, a trade conference for professional service and content companies.

Watch the video below for more. Salesforce social networking director and author Clara Shih talks about combining Facebook and Salesforce data within companies. Lexis Nexis community director Pavan Mediratta explains how his company is using LinkedIn data and social networking features to bring users together around its content. Plaxo chief platform architect and open social standards leader Joseph Smarr says he’s seeing big benefits from integration with Facebook and Gmail data. And Facebook platform manager Dave Morin, who graciously made it despite being sick, talks about his company’s vision for what the platform will be in the future.

Lord knows I’ve moderated some boring panels (as you can tell from the video, I’m not so much a TV/radio guy). But, this one ended up pretty good thanks to the panelists and the audience. Without further ado:

About the Author, Eric Eldon

Eric currently covers digital media technology and business news, especially what's happening on social networks and their platforms. He also writes and edits stories about venture capital, and lots of other stuff, too. He started at VentureBeat in the spring of 2007, half a year or so after Matt Marshall left his reporting job at the San Jose Mercury News to found the site. Eric previously cofounded a startup called Writewith, that was building editorial software for newspapers and other groups of writers. The startup didn't work out, but he learned a lot.
