There are also other companies working on 3D TOF cameras, e.g. german based PMDTec, a 3D TOF chip supplier with mass products already in other markets. They also might be a potential partner in the consumer area, as they already presented a gaming appplication last year at several conferences. However, PMDTec filed patents starting 1996, when the other players were not eben founded and they presented a 3D camera as a mass market camera at the Hannover Fair 2009.

Prime Sense and 3DV use totally different technology. 3DV is a Time of Flight (ToF) technology. Primes Sense projects a pattern on the user and uses the pattern to get a depth map using a regular video camera. Canesta is also ToF, but with much stronger patent protection. The one thing they are all lacking is a solid 3d analysis of the data. Just because you have a 3d model of a person from the front does not mean the computer knows that it is looking at. This is why all the demos are so lame. I remember "winning" a boxing game on a 3DV system and I was not even playing. I was just standing there checking out the technology.
