Opus hits the fundraising trail, looking for $250M

Early-stage venture firm Opus Capital Ventures is hoping to scrape together $250 million for its next fund (which has a hard cap of $350 million), reports VentureWire. Based in Menlo Park, Calif., the firm used to be called Weiss Peck & Greer Venture Partners. It raised four funds before changing its name to Opus. Its last fund, totaling $280 million, was brought in in 2006.

Already, Opus has a commitment from Montana Board Investments to contribute $7.5 million to its sixth fund. In addition to fundraising, the firm is also actively investing in startups. Already this year, it has sunk $10 million into a first round of financing for online gaming site SuperSecret, and $8 million into a first round for security software company AlertEnterprise.
