¡Fue muy rápido! Twitter is now in Spanish

pagina-espanol

That was fast. About a month after Twitter launched a crowdsourced translations program to tap its burgeoning user base for help, the site’s now available in Spanish, according to co-founder Biz Stone.

The microblogging network has some prominent Twitter users including the Spanish government, basketball player Manu Ginobili and singer Juan Fonseca, but their followings pale in comparison to the larger English accounts, which have amassed a few million followers.

Twitter could prove to be an even more influential service in Latin America because Internet penetration is lower, meaning SMS is a more critical communications link. Twitter has been trying to make more in-roads into developing countries — it secured a deal with India’s largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel last month, extending standard texting rates for tweets.

I agree with you about Twitter becoming an influential service in Latin America. Aside from the logistics of sending out short 140 character tweets because of low Internet penetration, Spanish-speakers are a huge untapped market, and I think Twitter will do very well within this community. As a matter of fact, myGengo has been translating celebrity tweets (like Ashton Kutcher and Barack Obama to name a couple) into Spanish for almost a week now...and we're seeing more and more people following us every day! We're also translating into Japanese, and translating popular Japanese Twitterers into English.
