In an update to an earlier post, Google says vice president of product marketing Bradley Horowitz’ comments were misconstrued by SearchEngineLand. He had told the blog that Google was considering separating its brand-new social networking service Buzz from Gmail.
The company is not removing Buzz from Gmail, according to Victoria Katsarou, a Google spokesperson. She says the company is looking at creating a “standalone” Buzz site that people can access independently. That would come on top of Buzz inside Gmail.
Buzz is one of Google’s most viable and aggressive pushes into social networking yet. It lets people follow status updates and posts from their closest friends in a service that rests inside Gmail. Gmail’s massive installed user base, with 176 million unique visitors in December according to Comscore, gives Buzz a running start on building a social network. Removing it from Gmail would be a fatal blow.
Here are Horowitz’ comments to SearchEngineLand in its revised story. The blog has both versions of the story in the interest of transparency:
“It’s clear that interest in Buzz may extend beyond the current Gmail base, and we’re open to serving that community,” said Bradley Horowitz, Google’s VP of Product Marketing, when I spoke to him about some Buzz issues at the TED Conference.
Horowitz stressed that Google would still offer a version of Buzz within Gmail, in addition to any independent version.
“We think that Buzz within Gmail is a great experience, and we’ll keep offering that as well,” Horowitz said.
