SafetyWeb adds $8M more to keep your kid safe

Here’s a little peace of mind for parents worrying about what their kids are doing online. SafetyWeb, a service that lets parents track their child’s activity on the Web, announced today that it has secured a second round of funding for $8 million. The funding will be used to expand the company’s marketing and partnership efforts.

The company provides parents with a way to monitor their child’s activity on social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or Bebo. While SafetyWeb is currently monitoring those social networks, it plans to expand to include things like cell phones, gaming consoles, criminal background checks, and geo-location services. An iPhone application is even available for those parents who want to monitor on-the-go.

SafetyWeb tracks both negative and positive activity and alerts parents if intervention may be needed. For example, if a child is experiencing cyber-bullying on Facebook from kids at school. The parent would be notified of the exchange and be able to step in. As more and more personal information becomes available and public online, a service like SafetyWeb may become a go to resource for parents wondering what their kids are up to when they lock themselves in their rooms for hours. The service costs $10 per child.

Several types of competitors exist, including SocialShield, a similar web-based service for tracking and monitoring a child’s activity, as well as Netbus.org, a software that’s downloaded on the child’s computer and tracks all activity.

The company, founded in 2010, secured a $750,000 seed round of funding from Battery Ventures back in November of 2009 . The recent round of funding was led by Battery Ventures and included First Round Capital.
