News Blips: Gaming Medical Tech, Schooling Parents on Games, Hulu on PS3, and More

Look closely enough and you'll notice gaming's touch in nearly every aspect of the medical world, from joystick-operated tools to surgical masks embroidered with Donkey Kong characters (okay, maybe not that last one).

News Blips:

Graphic processing units (GPU) used in games help reduce radiation levels in CAT scans. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego employed video cards from Nvidia that drastically cut down the time required to process images taken from a medical scan, resulting in diminished exposure to the radiation emitted from the scanning beams. Personally, I'd like to see the researchers run a Crysis benchmark on the device. [NewsWise]

Are your parents still not grasping the positive aspects of video games? Send 'em to school. The Leipzig Video Game School in Germany strives to educate parents on the fundamentals and benefits of gaming, even providing methods on how to use games as a bridge to a healthier relationship. Instructor Claudia Philipp stated the school's mission is "broadening media literacy and allowing people to get acquainted with what kind of games there are, what types of genres there are." I'd like to volunteer my services for First-Person Shooter 101. [DW-World]

Sony announces Hulu Plus for the PlayStation 3. The new service allows subscribers to stream full seasons of popular TV shows while adding a heapload of new movies to choose from the PS3's existing library of over 23,000 titles. Own an Xbox 360 or Wii? You're out of luck, as PlayStation Network Senior Director Susan Panico said that the PS3 is "the first and only console with dedicated gaming functionality that will offer Hulu Plus this year." That's okay, I've thought up of a solution that works for everyone — it's called cable.

2K Games airs out the details on its launch day downloadable content deals for Mafia 2. "Jimmy's Vendetta," which will release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms, lets players control the titular Jimmy, a rough-and-tumble mercenary who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty while working for the Mob. PS3 owners will be treated with an exclusive bonus DLC pack entitled "The Betrayal of Jimmy," which tracks high scores via a new leaderboard system. Mafia 2 is due out August 24.
