Nokia looking for a new CEO (report)

Cellphone maker Nokia is on the hunt for a new chief executive, one who can help it compete against popular new devices from Apple and others, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal that cites “people familiar with the situation.”

Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong told the Journal (and VentureBeat) that the company doesn’t comment on speculation.

The Finnish company remains the largest cellphone maker in the world, but it has been struggling to come up with a compelling alternative to smartphones like the iPhone and those using Google’s Android operating system. (One of its latest efforts to turn things around is the MeeGo operating system.) Nokia is also struggling to make headway in America, due to its failure to work with US mobile carriers, an absence of features, and the perception that Nokia phones just aren’t sexy.

Nokia has been interviewing US tech executives to replace current CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (pictured) and hopes to make a selection by the end of the month, the Journal says.

Times are changing, Nokia is not just a mobile phone hardware company anymore but changed into a tech company that has to understand social platforms. A former legal counsel and CFO who is not active in social media may not be the right person to lead this kind of company. Hopefully his replacement will understand the strategic importance of Android and move away from MeeGo as soon as possible.
