Rivet Games raises second round for web, social and mobile games (exclusive)

Rivet Games said today it has raised a second round of funding for its as yet-undisclosed web, social and mobile games.

The San Francisco company didn’t disclose the size of the round, but it said that it has now raised a total of $15 million. The funding shows that venture capitalists have indeed fallen in love with game developers, as the fundings continue unabated. It also means that focusing on social, mobile and web games all at once is probably a good strategy for a game company.

The company is headed by former Playdom executive Jesse Janosov, who joined as chief executive in August, 2010. The company was formerly known as FooMojo. FooMojo made games such as FooPets (pictured below).

The round came from existing investors Softbank Capital, Baseline Ventures, and Floodgate. Also joining as a new investor is Outpoint Capital.

“The nine months since I became CEO have seen the company evolve from its roots as the developer of virtual pet site, FooPets.com, toward a next generation, multi-platform game company,” said Janosov in a statement.  “Going forward, we are leveraging the new DNA of the company to deliver core games to core gamers, across a variety of platforms. Combining the gaming experience with state of the art analytics and modern marketing, we aim to change how games are built and delivered.”

Janosov said that Facebook, mobile, web, PC and even console games are on a collision course, where gamers will have multiple views of their game data. Janosov said the company’s upcoming product takes new creative approaches to gaming on these platforms and that the company’s marketing will “set a new standard.”

The company was originally founded as FooMojo in 2007 by Ron Hornbaker and Scott Sorochak. Now it has 33 employees. Janosov says the company’s engineering team comes from the traditional game market. Rivet Games has a scalable backend infrastructure and a 3D asset pipeline that could be used for multiple games. The company will launch a Facebook game in May and a mobile game after that.

Clearly, there’s no shortage of ambition here. The young company will face a ton of competition. But, as noted at a recent game venture capitalist event, times are both tough and exciting for game developers.

I can't even begin to explain my feelings towards Foomojo, in general. But this was the last drop. Not letting users know about THIS major change, so they have to hear through grapevine??? Really? But on the other hand, part of me is not surprised. When it comes down to customer service and/or communicating, they all seem to have missed that class, while obtaining their degrees.Bottom line, I will make sure my friends steer clear from that company, because experience shows, that nothing good comes from it.

  • Peeks

Karlia, your sentiments could not be shared MORE! I will stay FAR away from this company and encourage my friends to do that same regardless of new games they release or whatever they decide to call themselves next. They should realize that if you TRULY want to succeed in ANY business, it is imperative to learn how to treat your customers RIGHT!

I think everyone that has been unfortunate and played foopets from earlier when they were a good company to now feel the same. Don't ever have anything to do with Rivet Games!! Since they purchased foomojo it has gone to hell. They continually take things away and want money for less. They have now insisted that this free online game is now going to be a pay to play and you can't play anymore even if you have supported them all along, and it was geared towards kids, there are no kids that can pay for this game and the adults have just gotten so disgusted with their lack of customer service (there is no customer service) that everyone is quitting before they block all of their members that have supported them until now. They are trying the high pressure sales crap with all these kids and that is just plain wrong!! DON'T PLAY ANY OF RIVET GAMES!!! THEY WILL TAKE YOU FOR ALL YOUR MONEY AND GIVE NOTHING IN RETURN!!!!!

  • iflybyeyou

Foopets just deleted my account because I put this information on their website! This shows how much they are trying to control everyone there. Where is my right to freedom of speech?! It only took an hour after posting that they are have a huge amount of money for them to delete me so that no one can hear the truth about them stealing from little kids. DON'T GIVE ANY MONEY TO RIVET GAMES!!!!! THEY ARE THIEVES!!

I was around to see both your comments disappear. That they removed the one with the link in it makes sense according to their current rulebook in which any links to outside sources are not allowed, but removing the one where you just copy-pasted the content of the above interview is preposterous. The article itself is not in any way negative about Foomojo or Rivet Games, and I don't think that particular post of yours was, either. Suspending you definitely was not warranted. At all. It's a great pity.

Do not give Rivet Games a dime, or even go to their website. I am a member of Foopets (soon to be was as they are kicking everyone off their site who refuses to pay) and I would never give FooMojo anything seeing how they treat their members. I have been playing FooPets since the day it started and I have seen Foopets content and customer service seriously decline in that time. Not only are they only focused around making money, they are BREAKING THE LAW! There are numerous copyright infringements in the virtual shop where people can buy things such as furniture for their pets and they also have changed the Terms Of Service without any notification to their members. Don't become a member of any of Rivet Games' games.

My Thoughts on FooPets.com/FooMojo/Rivet Games: They are positively abhorrent at customer service, completely ignoring their members' concerns. They are soon to become a pay to play only site, but they have consistently charged more money for features and items while consistently taking more and more features and items away. Granted, their pixel pets are as realistic as they get. Awesome, in fact. So much so, that people become emotionally attached to them. A phenomenon covered by FooMojo's ToS. And frankly, they use those pets as a means of emotional blackmail. Further, their forum moderators are not nice people and are extremely rude and condescending. Adults are treated like children and children are treated like refuse. As of the 26th of April (2011), when the site becomes strictly pay to play, I predict an epic exodus from the site. Their numbers are already dropping. Many predict that the site is going to go down and no one from the company has bothered to effectively dispel that rumor. Moreover, except for their announcement of becoming pay to play only, they keep their members in the dark about every change and they change the site compulsively. Again, those changes almost always include revocations of features and items and an increase in what they charge for everything. Additionally, the site is completely unstable. Consistently glitches, “whites out,” doesn't load, search features have not worked the entire two years I've been a member and way too much more to mention. Harsh words? You bet. But very, very true. Stay away, for your own personal health and well being.

Where I do agree that the tactics of FMJ/Rivet are incorrigible, I strongly disagree on the statement about the Ambassadors. I watch from a far distance and I can only suggest that one tends to get what they dish out, over and over and over again.

  • Megaen

I'll stay far far away from Rivet games and no one please give them a dime what happened to foopets is sad and very upsetting a company that would treat it's paying members like that doesn't deserve to have a business.Megaen

It's with great sorrow that I have to agree with the others who left negative comments. I've been a member since 2/5/10 & my experience has been that a once enjoyable experience has become depressing & frustrating: 1) They ask you for “feedback” and after you give it, they take away what you most enjoy 2) Members suspended without a warning, and often never discovering the reason for it. 3) Poor customer service–Their motto seems to be “the customer is always wrong” as they try to promote a warm, fuzzy image.4) What I would call “virtual child abuse” That is, after encouraging children to adopt & breed many pets, they suddenly insist that all “pay to play” and give us a lockout date for all the formerly free pages. On the same day they disabled “gifting” (transferring virtual property) between Free & ClubFoo pages, effectively locking what people worked for in the game & in many cases paid hundreds of real dollars for onto the free pages. The choice they had? Pay to make the page a Club page or lose access the the page, pets & property on 4/26/11! Swearing & crying followed? You bet. 5) The site began as an over-13 game. Suddenly it was babyfied in both it's color scheme & loss of features, even though they knew that the paying members were overwhelmingly older women & teens. The excuse? Oh, it “solves” the problem of scammers & “profiteers.” Nope. Just destroyed the Foo community & a built-up economy–but since apparently no one in management actually LOOKED at how we were playing the game–how would they know?? 6) This site, started by an ex-vet, began as a place to “learn proper care of pets” and has ended up as a place with virtually nothing to do on it except buy things from the Shop & sell things back to the Shop (at half the price you paid for them!) breed pets & sell them back to the “Adoption Center.” There's no penalty whatsoever for pet neglect. The game is now Virtual Puppy & Kitty Mill. I could say much, much more–but that's enough for now. You get the idea.

I see that Rivet Games intends to produce new games, and yet they have done nothing but destroy the heart of the game that they already own. They will not get any recommendations from me, and I shall be warning anyone that I can against touching any of their games

  • Panthera_leo

FooMojo is nothing but a bunch of lying theives getting users emotionally attached to their idiot product and tormenting them with their scams. $15 mil. And FooMojo has been charging their users (some being younger than 13) money in order to play a crappy game with a crappy layout run by crappy admins. They say they do it because “they need the money”. And their members are listening to their disgusting propaganda.FooMojo, I'm glad I left. You want to know why? You don't deserve a user like me. You don't deserve ANY users at all. You don't even deserve to be paid at all for all that you have been treating us. And now you try to fool everyone with your Rivet games scam. We know who you are. We know what you have done to us at Foo. We know what you WILL do to innocent users at Rivet. All I wanted was the freaking search bar fixed, but NO.

If I knew back when I first joined the site how they try to control how you act there-let people intentional fix animals and send them to the shelter, while they remove any posts containing references to the Bible, I don't think I would have joined. They took all the ” fun” things off the site, blaming it on ” scammers and trolls” but instead of removing the people causing trouble, they punished everyone. They took off almost all means to get ” free” Foo dollars on the site, and now they intend to ban anyone that doesn't pay them to play after April 26th. They are so un-professional I doubt I will ever play another foo mojo/Rivet game after my sub on club foo runs out the first part of June, I don't need the abuse and false promises.

So sick of the Foomojo/Rivet bashing! If you do not like the site….LEAVE! Personally I will be glad when you are gone! Go to your NEW websites and have your pity parties. Here is a virtual kick to get you on your way…..

  • GladIleftFoo

@RidesIronHorse…I think your in the minority here…I left Foo months ago, but have followed all the drama that has ensued over their ridiculous new “rules” and changes..The members that are complaining have every right to complain when they are being asked to pay more for receiving less..Your comment is rude and uncalled for….I.perhaps you are the one who needs the kick…right where you ride that iron horse!

  • Catsmama7

Ridesironhorse everyone here has a right to free speech, so get off your HIGHHORSE

  • Catsmama7

Everyone on here has a right to free speech RidesIronHorse so get off your HIGHHORSE

  • Catsmama7

Sorr for the double post first one did not show up

  • DaeDreamer

We're all entitled to our opinions, but the overall experience with the site moderators has NOT been pleasant and those who disagree are most definitely in the minority. Respecfully, it's not necessary to “dish out” anything to be mistreated by the site moderators. All one need to do is to disagree with them. Period. One moderator in particular, who shall remain nameless, is extremely rude and condescending. Her job, as she apparently sees it, is to incite, provoke and threaten. Once she's done all that, she pushes her little button and people go *poof.*If one is trying to “keep the peace,” that is not how one should go about it. These “moderators,” this one in particular, should NOT be in the position she is in. NO ONE like that should be in a position of authority, especially one requiring customer service. What people fail to realize is that agreeing with and sticking up for their inappropriate and condescending attitude does not earn a person any brownie points. When it's all said and done, these folks sticking up for Foo will get kicked to the curb just as quick as everyone else.

  • DaeDreamer

Can't handle the truth, eh? Geesh!

  • iflybyeyou

RidesIronHorse is just showing their freedom of speech which ISN'T allowed on Foopets.Let them show just how stupid they are for backing foomojo or rivet games, they are the one who will lose all their money that they have given foopets when it shuts down in 3 months due to their horrible choice to force the awesome members to pay to play.Bet they are one of the many admin from foopets that won't give customer service!!!

  • RidesIronHorse

Are you talkin to me? LOL I am still here…………

  • RidesIronHorse

It is IronHorse not high horse and just like at Foo, those who express their opinion in forums are considered stupid etc. Rolls of my back~hee~hee

  • RidesIronHorse

Obviously you are telling me I do not have that right? I ain't your sister…………

  • RidesIronHorse

When and if it shuts down I will find something else to do beside trying to ruin other peoples reputations and fun. Such nice people. Just think! You will be able to say “I told you so”. And that should make you happy. I could care less! I can have fun in an empty room, can you?. snicker
