Anonymous denies involvement in PSN outage

Hacktivism group Anonymous, which routinely attacks major corporations and takes up political causes, said today it is not responsible for the theft of sensitive information and credit card data from Sony’s Playstation Network (PSN) online gaming network.

Sony laid indirect blame for the intrusion and PSN outage on Anonymous yesterday, saying that its defenses were down while it fended off a denial of service attack by Anonymous, which left the doors open for other hackers to come in and steal sensitive information. Anonymous hit Sony with the denial of service attack after the company went after hacker George Hotz, who reverse engineered the PlayStation 3 to run unauthorized programs.

“If a legitimate and honest investigation into credit card theft is conducted, Anonymous will not be found liable,” the group stated in a press release.

In a letter to Congress earlier today, Sony said that it found a file labeled “anonymous” with a fragment of the hacktivism group’s slogan — “we are legion.” That prompted the company to label Anonymous at least partially responsible for an attack that brought down its online gaming network and resulted in hackers stealing sensitive information about 100 million PSN and Station.com users.

“While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our ‘leadership’ does not condone credit card theft,” the group stated in a press release. “We are concerned with the erosion of privacy and fair use, the spread of corporate feudalism, the abuse of power and the justifications of executives and leaders who believe themselves immune personally and financially for the actions they undertake in the name of corporations and public office.”

It’s true that the theft does not fit the modus operandi of Anonymous, which is usually concerned with disrupting companies that get in the way of free speech and political causes. But it’s important to note that Anonymous does not directly deny involvement in the attack on the PSN in the announcement — it only denies involvement in the credit card and information theft. While the group might not possess the same public relations prowess as Sony, it’s unusual that the group hasn’t made this announcement airtight and outright denied involvement entirely for the intrusion.

Unknown hackers attacked the PSN on April 19, forcing the Japanese company to bring down the network, which has more than 77 million registered users. The nightmare then continued after hackers broke into the company’s Station.com site, which serves as a host for its PC games like Everquest. Hackers were able to steal information from as many as 24.6 million accounts on that site, according to Sony. In all, more than 100 million accounts might have been compromised. The PlayStation Network is a critical service that competes with Microsoft’s Xbox Live online gaming service — as well as other online gaming services. There are also 948 games now available in the PlayStation Network store, as well as 4,000 pieces of add-on content for games.

Can we please stop quoting “Anonymous”? They are not a cohesive, monolithic entity; they do not have “representatives”. Do you know who you're quoting when you write these ridiculous articles? You're likely quoting some 15-year old punk with only a passing interest in Anonymous. There is no hierarchy in Anonymous, therefore no single person can claim unilaterally that Anonymous is or isn't involved in something.Just admit it: you in the media know nothing of Anonymous or how it works.Go to 4chan /b/ and see what Anonymous is, or stop writing articles about a subject with which you are so obviously unacquainted.

For all the times Sony has lied to it's customers, to government bodies, and even in the courts, I don't believe a word that comes from Sony's PR department. Anonymous is today's digital equivalent to the late 1960's early 1970's era protest movements. Thought the government calls it illegal, I view DDOS actions by anonymous to be a form of legal protest. Much like a picket line of sorts, blocking immediate access to a virtual location (a website) for reasons of protest.I support Anonymous, and back their actions as much as I back the right of protesters to legally assemble in physical protests!

they are a bunch of teenage fags

kids who can't get a job because they have no social skills. The reason being, they sit on the computer day in day out and can't get a root because they are nerds. Take this fag George Hotz, he is the ultimate loser in life. He is famous for having too much time on his hands he is a sword smoker at best…. Go and have a beer George Hotz you might have a slight chance you wont die a virgin you fag…. Anyone who praises or looks up to people like that need to wake up to themselves he is an oxygen thief………….

You're full of crap. So you condone criminality?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3TJDR7OZ76RPCIJ7MICJNOCJKI fedexa

Then why was Anonymous so silent when the network was hacked? What happened to the threats they threw at Sony? Do they really think that people are stupid?

  • http://twitter.com/Yankee_Angel Christine

If some hacker group attacked the Sony network and made it vulnerable to intrusion by other hackers, then as far as I'm concerned, the initial group bears the ultimate responsiblity, even if they don't condone theft of personal information. Grow up and learn that your actions have consequences even if they are not always the consequences you intended. I hope EVERYONE connected with this intrusion is found and made to face a jury of their peers (most of whom I hope are PSN customers.)

Anonymous said they stopped targeting Sony after they dropped the charges against George Hotz, which was before the outage.

you're ignorant. so you don't support the right to civil protest? if the usa operated with your way of thinking black people would still be at the back of the bus and women still couldn't vote. civil protest is how things are changed, its how attention is called to things that need to be noticed. a ddos is a sit in. a virtual sit in. why don't you educate yourself a little before blasting someone with such eloquent statements like “you're full of crap”

  • melonmurder

As far as you're concerned? Really? With as much blatant ignorance as you just spewed forth, I am stunned. As far as you're concerned Louis Pasteur (french chemist and microbiologist) is responsible for weaponized Anthrax. He was the first person to prove the existence of germs. Therefore, using your logic, because he made it possible to study germs he is responsible for the creation of biological nightmares.

  • KestralKudesao

I agree Melon. Why didnt Sony update their security if they had been attacked once already. I believe in the end, Sony should have learned from the first attack and changed its security proticol, instead they left it as it is. THEY left themselves open. Its not like they didnt have time to change or upgrade security.

  • zipperskyn

Either way this is a huge shit sandwich that we're all taking a bite of..I had hoped that the network would be up by now but apparently not. I'm starting to wonder if it will be up at all this month.. It's a criminal investigation on a massive scale so expect them to take their time.

  • KestralKudesao

Yea..i just want PSN back online, but their are also speculations as to it being shut down permanently. Lets hope thats not the case

  • zipperskyn

Hmm, I wonder if it was left open purposely. By doing it this way could possibly give them a chance to locate or identify outside intrusions before they start up the NEW system.. I've read that Sony was planning on changing the network anyway, so what better way to incorporate a new system then by finding the imperfections of their software then blame hackers for it lol just a thought. conspiracy theory.. But why loose out on millions of dollars doing it, unless that money is paid back like insurance lol

  • zipperskyn

ha yeah me too. I think they would make it a pay as you play before they permanently shut it down

  • melonmurder

The “oxygen thief” here is yourself. With your inability to come up with anything more clever than “fag” or a fellatio jokes, your statements have no validity and simply show your own obliviousness to situation being discussed. Why not use civil language and get to a real point, instead of showing everyone YOU are actually the one without social skills.

Kiri, I think your analysis is not only flawed but insulting to the struggle epitomized by the Civil Rights movement. blacks, latinos, the chinese and other ethnicities in the united states had been explicitly persecuted and stigmatized, faced real world trauma, lynching, economic discrimination and social ostracization. anonymous seems to be a group of people who are angry, undisciplined and unprincipled. In what way does this promote any real political or social message? Anonymous to me has always seemed to be about arbitrary and inconsistent exercises of power—something that the civil rights movement was against. At best, the hackers seem to be upset that they need to pay for things. fine. I'm anti-capitalist too, but their techniques privilege their own technocratic elite, have no redistributive ends and come off as selfish and self-righteous. I think hackers in general are fascinating, but to characterize them as a powerless and oppressed group of social commentators might be mistaken.

  • Brian Anderson

It's crosses a line well past civil protest when you're breaking federal and international law to do so.

  • KestralKudesao

You know… looking at it that way..makes alot of sense lol.And ANONymous just happend to be the bast scapegoat given their recent ''dealings'' with sony lol.

  • KestralKudesao

probibly, but at that rate, their gonna lose all of their clientell. one of the biggest reasons people got the PS3 was the free psn servers. so what about those losses?

  • Wraith1980

Buy an Xbox. lul. :D Sony f*cked up bad and now, because they know it, they're trying to shift media attention to Anon instead. Silly move, I'd not be surprised if Anon DID target the PSN network now, should it ever come back. Should be fun, trying to play COD while being DDOS'd. :P

  • Wraith1980

You don't have a clue what you're talking about. If you buy a remote control car and take it apart to build its motor into something else, are you doing anything wrong? No, you bought it, and are entitled to do as you please with it. That's all jailbreakers are doing. They bought it and are entitled to wipe it, recode it, do what they damn well please, as long as tehy dont SELL the modified product. Sony suing him was a joke, and they suffered for it. Have fun playing PSN now tho mate, oh hang on, you can't. And if Anon get pissed off enough, I hope they ensure you never can again. Hah! :P

  • KestralKudesao

No i dont think Anon will attack PSN, but i think they will attack sony again
