The trademark applications were filed Aug. 16 for “design and development of computer hardware and software” and were discovered by GeekWire over the weekend. The company’s logo, included in the trademark filing, is a bit of a Rorshach inkblot test, but it looks an awful lot … Continue Reading

NPD: Android maintains US lead, Google buy could revive Motorola
Surprise surprise, Android is still the leading US smartphone platform, with a 52 percent second quarter share, according to the research firm NPD Group.
That’s to be expected, since not much has happened to displace Android’s lead in the last quarter. NPD also notes that Motorola’s market share has fallen in the quarter — down to 9 percent from 12 percent last year — but Google’s recent Motorola purchase could bring some new life to … Continue Reading

Annoyed by braggarts, hackers will vote on best security hacks
Skilled hackers are often annoyed by amateurs who use automated attacks to cause mayhem. They refer to the youngsters as “script kiddies,” since they follow scripts and aren’t truly skillful. So a new web site called RankMyHack.com has emerged that will allow underground hackers to anonymously submit their exploits and have the community vote on them.
The New York Times reports that some 700 hackers have submitted evidence of more than 1,200 web site hacks … Continue Reading
AMD stays the course with new desktop and laptop chips
Advanced Micro Devices is doing something today that seems rather unfashionable. The chip maker is announcing a series of new additions to its desktop and laptop microprocessors.
It seems so mundane to introduce PC chips at a time when competitors Intel and Nvidia are racing off into smartphone, tablet and “ultrabook” (thin laptops) chips. Hewlett-Packard said last week that its PC business might be put up for sale, in part because tablet demand was hurting … Continue Reading

Why HP needs to merge with SAP
HP has had to face tough realities this week. Fortunately, there is a way for it to survive: Embrace the inevitable trend favoring “vertical” companies.
In the first part of the 2000s, IBM and HP went in two vastly different directions: HP acquired Compaq to bolster a horizontally-integrated PC business, while IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo and focused on creating a vertical stack of enterprise products.
In the early 2010s, HP’s decision to … Continue Reading
The age of personal robots is at hand (video)
If the past 50 years saw the rise of industrial robots, the next 50 will be about the age of personal robots.

At last week’s Hot Chips conference at Stanford University, Cousins demonstrated what his 450-pound personal robot could do, from giving high fives to … Continue Reading
Google must take the offensive with Motorola patent portfolio
Google’s plan to buy Motorola Mobility will likely win approval from the Department of Justice, just as Oracle earlier received approval to buy Sun. The acquisition will double Google’s workforce and increase the size of its patent portfolio to more than 17,000 patents. What should it do with all those patents?
Google is not an active patent plaintiff, but at the same time, Google has never owned this kind of patent portfolio before.
