15 casting suggestions for video game movie adaptations
July 28, 2012 10:30 AM
Everyone has their opinion on who should portray their favorite novel, comic book, or video game characters in movie adaptations. Unfortunately, “perfect” casting choices, like Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier in X-Men, are few and far between.
To avoid casting disasters such as Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper in the Super Mario Bros. film, we’ve formed a list of actors who actually resemble popular game characters. For shits and giggles, we threw in some offbeat recommendations, as well.
-
Charlize Theron as Samus Aran
Charlize Theron’s look in Prometheus screams Samus Aran (Metroid: Other M) in her Zero Suit. Plus, she’s in space fending off hostile alien creatures.
-
Mike Epps as Little Jacob
Mike Epps' experience doing impressions as a stand-up comic would make him a solid candidate to play Little Jacob (Grand Theft Auto IV). And shit, the guy totally looks like him, too.
-
Michelle Fairley as Flemeth
Michelle Fairley does an excellent job playing a regent queen in Game of Thrones, and I bet she'd be great as Flemeth (Dragon Age II), the Witch of the Wilds. Is it me, or are they both kind of sexy?
-
Mads Mikkelsen as Rolento
Mads Mikkelsen has the best poker face ever, as seen in Casino Royale, which fits nicely with the power-hungry Rolento (Street Fighter X Tekken).
-
Kat Dennings as Ivy Valentine
Ivy Valentine (Soul Calibur V) is not easily emulated, but actress Kat Dennings has the eyes, skin tone, and determination to portray the vicious fighter. What Dennings lacks in height, she makes up for with her epic gazongas.
-
Jon Hamm as the Medic
Jon Hamm oozes with charm, but the talented actor could easily turn into Team Fortress 2's cold and unethical Medic in a heartbeat. "I am a doctor, not a playboy!"
-
Amanda Seyfried as Rosalina
Cartoony characters look horrid in live-action films, but Amanda Seyfried is as close to Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy 2) as we're gonna get. Her giant eyeballs and luscious lips are out of this world.
-
Guy Pearce as Commander Shepard
Guy Pearce may not look exactly like Mass Effect 3's male Commander Shepard (that honor goes to Dutch model Mark Vanderloo), but the Emmy Award winner has the acting skills to goad the Reapers into surrendering.
-
Bruce Willis as Ghost
Bruce Willis's badassery is legendary, so playing as lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) would be a walk in the park. Also, the Die Hard star knows a thing or two about apparitions.
-
Seth Green as Joe
Seth Green’s boyish features, red hair, and known nerdism seem appropriate for a movie version of Viewtiful Joe. Just put a backwards cap on him and we're good to go.
-
Dalip Singh Rana as El Gigante
Dalip Singh Rana is relatively small at 7' 1" to play El Gigante (Resident Evil 4), but if director Paul Anderson runs out of money for his Resident Evil films he can always ask "The Great Khali" to put on gray makeup and squash some ants.
-
Elijah Wood as Limbo kid
Elijah Wood has not aged a day since 1989, and if you saw him as Kevin in Sin City you know he doesn't need to speak to give a chilling performance. Mix those two traits together and we have ourselves the real-life kid from Limbo.
-
Adam Sandler as a Big Daddy
Adam Sandler played a diver called Scuba Sam in the movie Big Daddy, in which he looks after a little boy. In BioShock, Big Daddies wear retro diver suits and protect little girls. Coincidence? Of course it is.
-
Gene Simmons as Quina Quen
Gene Simmons rocks demonic face paint, and his tongue is feared around the world for its unnatural length. Quina Quen (Final Fantasy IX) is an asexual chef who eats frogs. Right.... But think about it: Has anyone ever seen them together?
-
Snooki as Torchic
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi could easily be confused with slimy Pokémon like Ditto or Grimer, but she has more in common with Torchic. Both are pint-sized, fiery, and orange.
