Video game programmers have been hiding secret messages, inside jokes, and general wackiness in their titles for decades. Finding these “Easter eggs” keeps gamers busy, and it shows that you can’t take yourself too seriously even when facing certain death in the midst of a zombie outbreak, alien invasion, or demonic possession.
Check out the gallery below to see 15 of the coolest, funniest, and kookiest Easter eggs of games released in 2012.
How Conan thinks he should look in Halo 4
Assassin turkey (Assassin’s Creed III)
Connor comes face to beak with the greatest killer in the Assassin Order -- a turkey. Whistle near your mansion to summon a seemingly ordinary bird, then do the Konami code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A) to reveal its true self.Source: Samir Torres
Piano theme from the original Max Payne (Max Payne 3)
Max's piano skills are rusty, but if you mess around with the pianos in chapters 1, 8, 11, and 13, Mr. Payne will perform the theme from his original game.Source: Samir Torres
Underwater hungover pirate (Far Cry 3)
If you explore the far right side of the Rook Islands' shore (coordinates X:807.5, Y:637.3) you'll come across a drowned pirate sitting in front of a toilet. It must have been one hell of a night at the Crazy Cock Bar.Source: Samir Torres
Lost Claptrap (Torchlight II)
A lost CL4P-TP General Purpose Robot from Borderlands roams the Scrapworks area of Torchlight II. After defeating Bloatfang, search the western path to find it. The chatty tin can will reward you with the rare "Claptrap's Nut" socketable item.Source: Samir Torres
Thief: The Dark Project reference (Dishonored)
In Daud's Base (Flooded District), you can witness the training of a new assassin. The dialogue is almost identical to the tutorial scene from Thief: The Dark Project, a game that inspired Dishonored's designers.Source: Samir Torres
Space hamster (Mass Effect 3)
If you purchased the Space Hamster pet at Citadel Souvenirs during Mass Effect 2, you may have noticed a small rodent running around in Normandy's engineering deck in Mass Effect 3. Catch it and your furry friend will return to its little habitat in the Captain's Cabin.
The space hamster itself is a joke back to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate. Spelljammer (an outer space AD&D campaign setting) had the Giant Space Hamster as a monster, and Minsc the Beserker had a hamster which he claimed was a Miniature Giant Space Hamster in Baldur's Gate.Source: Samir Torres
Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter (Halo 4)
TV comedians Conan O'Brien and Andy Richter recorded funny dialog for two UNSC crate-loaders. Search for the grunts near the hangar at the start of mission 6.

GnoMAD Scythes (Darksiders II)
Finding the four elusive GnoMAD Gnome statues scattered around the game (City of the Dead, The Ivory Citadel, The Weeping Crag, and The Black Stone) will award Death with the legendary GnoMAD Scythes. With a special ability called "You mad?" you can't afford to miss this weapon.Source: Samir Torres
Ice cream truck kill (Hitman: Absolution)
Agent 47 can kill you in too many ways to describe, but we've never seen a hit quite like this.
In the mission titled End of the Road, you have to off your target in the middle of a desert. Shots to the face usually do the trick, but if you're feeling creative, shoot every nearby vulture while they're in the air. Your victim will then try to escape only to be run over by an ice cream truck.Source: Samir Torres
Rage secret room (Doom 3: BFG Edition)
Rage is riddled with Doom references and Easter eggs, so this time Doom 3 added a Rage secret room in the very last level.
Before fighting the CyberDemon, look for the Rage logo on the left side of the room. You'll find ammo, armor, and even unlock an Achievement.Source: Samir Torres
Double rainbow (Borderlands 2)
While hanging out on the eastern side of the Highlands, head towards the Hyperion Base. Look for a tent down a cliff. When you jump on the tent you'll get a radio call referencing the popular double rainbow viral video. What does it mean?

Dancing robot (Transformers: Fall of Cybertron)
While exploring Cybertron as Jazz, after helping Cliffjumper cross a gate, turn to the right and look for a breakable wall. Once inside, keep walking right until you see a lever. Pull it to reveal a small robot that does the "Carlton dance" from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.Source: Samir Torres
Fun at the playground (Resident Evil 6)
Chris and Piers come across a playground during the third chapter of their campaign. Tired of blasting zombie skulls all day, they can relax by riding a panda or going head-first down a slide. The apocalypse can wait.Source: Samir Torres
Room 302 (Silent Hill: Downpour)
If you climb an emergency ladder while investigating Lansdale Ave, you'll find yourself inside room 302, Henry Townshend's apartment from Silent Hill 4: The Room. The dark residence looks just as creepy as it did in the 2004 game.Source: Samir Torres
Playable Atari games (Call of Duty: Black Ops II)
Tired of playing shooters? Then go to the multiplayer map called Nuketown 2025 and shoot the heads off every mannequin you see in under two minutes. Activision's logo will pop up on the large TV set sitting outside the houses. Approach the screen and play classic Activision games like Pitfall!, River Raid, Kaboom!, and Hero.Source: Samir Torres
