Music trade fair MIDEM just revealed the winners of its annual startup competition: Songful, Jamplify, Stageit and Audience.fm, who join previous years’ illustrious winners SoundCloud and Songkick.
MIDEM is mostly an old-industry event, drawing up to 7,000 people to Cannes, France each year to network and talk deals. There’s a pocket of strong startup action though, with a music “hackday” hidden away upstairs and a pitch competition with 30 companies shortlisted across three categories.
Judges for the competition included Deezer CEO Axel Dauchez, blogger Robert Scoble, founding Pandora investor Larry Marcus, Eventbrite CTO Renaud Visage, and YouTube’s Vivien Lewit.
Songful (Israel) – disrupting the guitar (or at least GuitarHero)
Songful, the winner of the Music Discovery, Creation and Recommendation section, is an iPad app that’s a whole lot more fun than GuitarHero. Thanks to a partnership with Ultimate Guitar and tech via Waves Audio, Songful lets you program chords for any song you want – all you have to do is strum. Jamplify (USA) – “amplify your fanbase”
Jamplify, the winning competitor in Marketing and Social Engagement, lets artists set up “jampaigns” and track how their fans share across social media and how many people they refer. The top-ranking sharers are rewarded with free tickets and other exclusives.
Stageit (USA) – souped-up gig streaming
Stageit, the winner of the Direct to Consumer Sales & Content Monetisation category, is described by its CEO as a cross between “Skype for music” and a real-life concert experience. Artists can beam live and interactive experiences straight from their laptops to fans, whether they’re intimate one-offs or larger staged gigs.
Audience.fm (France) – Special Prize winner
Fleur Pellerin, the French Minister for SMEs, Innovation and Digital Economy, awarded a special prize to Audience.fm – one of a fair few French startups in the competition. Audience.fm is a big data company, aiming to measure artist-fan engagement across Facebook, Spotify, Deezer, SoundCoud and the rest of the web. Think “Klout for music.”
