Stay on top of all our E3 2013 coverage here.
Sony is holding its press briefing at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) starting at 6 p.m. PST today.
The whole world will be watching what happens at E3, the big gaming trade show that should draw 45,000 to 50,000 game-industry professionals this week in Los Angeles.
We’re expecting to hear more details about Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 console, coming this fall. GamesBeat staff will liveblog the event in real time on this page, so please be sure to come back later for commentary on the event.
Sony first announced the PlayStation 4 in February and showed off a bunch of new titles, from a new Killzone game to Knack from renowned developer Mark Cerny.
Hopefully, the company will show a real box this time. We’re expecting to hear more about a launch date or launch window today as well, but we might not see a price on the machine until later. Please add your own comments as you watch the event.
Here’s the livestream:

OK, that wraps up this press conference. Thanks for tuning in. Please stay tuned to http://gamesbeat.com/e3-2013 for a ton more coverage tonight and all week long. Thak you!
Well, the scales have tipped. Your move, Microsoft.
Sony took a lot of very direct shots at Microsoft tonight — and it won most of them.
$100 cheaper than Xbox One!
$399 for PlayStation 4.
PlayStation’s cloud-gaming service: starting in 2014.
PS4 will have some “long-term” exclusive relationship with Activision and Bungie for Destiny. What exactly is unclear, but the game will “evolve” in a more exclusive fashion on PS4 somehow.
Now more than five. More people keep joining the session!
Now the players joined a “public event” — five people are now playing together.
Upgradeable guns in Destiny.
If you look for Halo comparisons, you can find them. A little lit-up companion flying around, no look-down-iron-sights shooting. More open-form combat (vs. very scripted Call of Duty style). But these guys have *powers*.
Watching a co-op session for Destiny. They’re inside a giant dam-like wall. One player releases a “ghost” companion that helps light the way.
We have lots of Destiny coverage coming up on GamesBeat.
Now showing Bungie’s Destiny.
Drive Club: PS Plus Edition free to PS Plus members.
PlayStation Plus membership will carry over to PS4.
PlayStation Plus will continue on PS4.
PS4 disc-based games don’t need to be connected online. Single player offline is perfectly OK.
Can trade in games at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever (disc-based games).
PS4 supports used games. Huge cheer from the crowd.
Update: It *is* Mad Max, and Max *does* put the guy out of his misery. Not by using his last shotgun shell but by running over him.
Another PS4 premiere. Opening of a guy driving up, finding another guy in the desert. Very Mad Max-ish. He only has one bullet, so he won’t put the other guy on the ground out of his misery.
He wants to eat your soul.
The Elder Scrolls Online .. comes to PS4 Spring 2014. Beta is exclusively first on PS4.
The Elder Scrolls Online. We saw this last E3. Now on PS4?
We’re seeing a next-gen Lebron James in NBA 2K14. Showing his in-game model talking next to the real thing.
Lebron’s in-game neck beard is so lifelike!
PlayStation 4 gets an hour of extra, exclusive gameplay in Watch_Dogs.
Sony blacked out the arena’s lights at the same time the Watch_Dogs guy caused a blackout in the game. Nice touch.
We’ll have a lot more on this game soon.
Watch_Dogs live gameplay. It looks really good.
Assassin’s Creed 4 kept stuttering and finally crashed. Too bad. Feel bad for the guy doing the demo.
A lot of technical problems for that demo. At least we know it’s live, not video.
Next-generation fire sure looks purty.
It looks good on PS4 — jungle scene with very natural foliage that you realistically move through.
Uh oh. AC IV Black Flag is running jerky on the big screen.
Live Assassin’s Creed demo right now, after a brief technical hiccup.
Final Fantasy XV or Versus XIII looked good. So did Kingdom Hearts III. So did the ….
Oh, Final Fantasy XIV (14) is coming to PS3 and PS4. Good luck keeping track of all of those.
“Now in development” — so that may be a ways away yet.
Kingdom Hearts III.
They’re teasing a quick video of a new Kingdom Hearts right now. Audience is quite excited.
New Kingdom Hearts coming!
The Final Fantasy Versus XIII logo changed at the end to Final Fantasy XV. That’s “15″ for you non-Romans.
A little Shadow of the Colosssus moment there.
Final Fantasy XIII Versus.
Shocking: All the male characters in this video have ridiculous hair.
Some series called Final Fantasy or something?
Square Enix now showing off a PS4 game.
Diablo III coming to PS4 (and PS3). Yawn.
Galak-Z: The Dimensional. All these games just mentioned console debut on PS4.
Secret Ponchos. Ray’s The Dead. Outlast.
New ‘n’ Tasty — Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, a remake is coming!
Mercenary Kings from the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World devs.
Octodad: Dadliest Catch.
Another indie game: Don’t Starve, from the Shank people.
Sony wants to let indie devs self-publish their own content.
Same overhead perspective as Bastion, in a futuristic city.
Their game, Transistor, hits PS4 early next year.
Supergiant Games (Bastion) onstage now.
We’re probably going to see some indie stuff now.
Adam Boyes, VP of Third Party Relations, SCEA now onstage.
Tomorrow, the full demo of that will be live at 1 p.m. in the Sony booth or on PlayStation.com. It’s actually a little funny. We’re not sure what’s going on here, but some broken fourth-wall stuff here.
He looks REALLY real.
The Sorcerer — old guy is the same old guy from previous “realistic face” demos.
That’s a good time for us to remind you: A good-looking “in-game engine” demo doesn’t necessarily look the same as what you’ll play when the controller is in your hands. You can always make a scripted movie look better.
Someone went to the Emperor Palpatine school of evil speeches.
The Dark Sorcerer by Quantic Dream — we’re looking at a movie now, but Sony reminds us it’s all in-game real-time graphics.
Killzone, Drive Club, Knack are launch titles. Infamous next year.
Knack: This was a new game they introduced at the PS4 reveal.
Great use of music by InFamous.
It still has a super-powered protagonist, but it has a decidedly different vibe from past games. Much more detailed worlds, more futuristic setting, more story-driven, probably more character development. Seems like story will be a bigger deal here.
Sucker Punch: inFamous Second Son. It’s electric.
Infamous: Second Son video.
Drive Club. Another one from the PS4 reveal a few months back.
New footage. The visuals are a little Crysis 3-ish.
Killzone: Shadow Fall. We saw this during the PS4 reveal.
The Order: 1886 … a new PS4 game coming.
The Order 1886.
New IP has come: Cinematic, created in engine. It’s scary. Shooting creatures in the fog.
40 PS4 titles in development.
Yeah, that whole non-gaming section sure was written as if it was *just* for gamers. Really reactionary after the Microsoft Xbox One reveal.
Shu Yoshida: 14 game studios at Sony: the largest first party in the world.
Flixster is coming to PS4 as well. “Further commitment that we’re providing gamers … entertainment.” See? There they go again. All this extra multimedia stuff they’re making an effort of making it “for gamers.”
This is the part of the show where Andrew House tells us about Sony’s corporate partners.
Music Unlimited available from day one. PS3 is #1 Netflix platform. Redbox Instant is coming.
Sony keeps reiterating TV/movie content ‘for gamers’ as if they’re afraid of a Microsoft-like reaction. They clearly don’t want to scare gamers off, but that’s a weird way to frame this. Pretty sure gamers like all sorts of media content.
Sony Pictures is doing brand new original programming plan for content exclusively on PS 4. Just like with the “Amazing PlayStation 2.”
Exclusive TV content for PlayStation Network and PS4 from Sony Pictures, tailored for gamers.
Showing off that Sony made Community, Spider-Man, Breaking Bad…
TV/movie/music content “curated for gamers” — what does that mean? Daft Punk, Jack White… so that’s what you guys like? No classical music?
The PS 4 is visible
Uh-oh — big screens showing a lot of movie/TV posters! Microsoft didn’t get such a hot reaction when they went this multimedia route. Let’s see how Sony tackles this.
We’ll have a picture uploaded here in a sec.
GamesBeat guys saying it looks like a PS2.
PlayStation 4 looks like two pizza boxes thrown haphazardly on top of one another.
Here is our first official glimpse of the actual PS4 hardware.
Andrew House, president of SCEA, onstage to talk PS4.
OK, it’s PlayStation 4 time! Yeah, who cares about Batman, GTA, GT, etc.
$299 exclusive Grand Theft Auto V PlayStation 3 bundle (500 GB) coming Sept 17.
Nightfall and 1960s versions of Batman exclusive to PS3.
Crowd cheering for the Joker more loudly than Batman himself. Arkham Origins comes out 10/25.
Batman wasn’t very nice to drop that guy.
Yeah, OK — I’m ready for another Batman game.
Now previewing third-party PS3 games. Now getting a look at the new Batman.
Tretton: Not too shabby for a platform in its seventh year.
GT6 kinda makes you wonder if we really need next-gen, though. Cars look great. I don’t know if I can tell you the visual differences between these rides and their Xbox One/PS4 brethren.
Gran Turismo 6: Smattering of applause. Yes, it’s GT. But it’s a little … underwhelming now after seeing The Crew and Need for Speed earlier today from Ubisoft and EA, respectively.
Beyond: VERY different vibe from older previews/videos.
Beyond: Two Souls — showing the more tough side of our 13-year-old protagonist. Dean felt it was a little strange and almost out of place. Yes, she’s possessed — but the game is very tough-guy now.
Jodie Holmes is the new Rambo.
Video for Rain now, which was a little Journey-like in our eyes: http://venturebeat.com/2013/03/25/playstation-3s-rain-may-be-the-next-journey/
As Shoe says, Rain is going to be the next Journey.
I really want to go home and finish The Last of Us.
Puppeteer is up: Very quirky, “dark fairy tale” platformer.
Here is our review of The Last of Us: http://venturebeat.com/2013/06/05/the-last-of-us-review/ We really like it.
This is a great video, if you can see it on the live steam above. I wish I could play it now.
Now talking The Last of Us. Yeah, the game’s not out yet, but this is old news! See our review: http://venturebeat.com/2013/06/05/the-last-of-us-review/
That was quick! Now we’re onto the PlayStation 3.
Vita owners will play PS4 games over remote play.
Final Fantasy X, X-2, Dead Nation, Flower, Walking Dead, and more coming.
Final Fantasy X and X-2. Flower, Dead Nation all coming soon.
It’s a problem when your biggest applause is Killzone.
Sony has an awesome screen.
85 titles for PS Vita by the end of the year.
He says Vita is just beginning its life cycle. Add up all of the games, and you get 650 titles available. On average, in U.S. , Vita customers buy an average of 10 games.
I’m game for more Vita talk. I’ve played it every day for two months now.
Jack Tretton onstage, saving PS4 for later. First, Sony wants to talk PS3 and Vita.
Jack Trentton is on stage.
Sony’s loud, loud, LOUD montage of game-video clips playing now to set the mood. A nearly deaf mood.
Testing! Sony presser is starting now.
We are inside with electricity.
