When you think of gaming on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the people who run Electronic Arts want you to think of its games.
EA revealed that it was the No. 1 publisher on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in “the Western world” during December. Major titles like Battlefield 4, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, and Need for Speed: Rivals helped the company capture more of the software market share for those two new systems than any other game maker.
The soccer title FIFA 14 and the blockbuster Battlefield 4 shooter both performed especially well, as they were two of the top-three best-selling games in the West, which includes Europe and the Americas, in December. They came in behind only Call of Duty: Ghosts. In Europe, however, FIFA 14 was the top-selling game.
EA’s games represent 35 percent of all the games sold for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during the last quarter (which was EA’s fiscal third quarter).
Electronic Arts is boasting about its performance on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One because those systems represent the future but also because EA’s (and other publishers’) games did not perform as well on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during the holiday season. That caused the company to miss on its revenue expectations, even though it beat its earnings guidance.
“In a transitional quarter, EA delivered EPS results above our guidance driven by strong sales of our next-generation console titles, continued growth in our digital games and services, and financial discipline across the business,” EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said.
EA came out strong on the new systems from Sony and Microsoft. Both consoles launched in November, and EA launched Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Need for Speed: Rivals, and NBA Live 14. Additionally, the company released Peggle 2 on Xbox One’s digital game store in December.
