Is Yelp a reviews site or a marketplace?
The company launched a new aspect of its Yelp Platform today to get users to transact on the site.
Last year, Yelp launched support for online food ordering and delivery. Now, the company wants to help you book your next spa and salon appointment. In the end, this is a bid for your credit card number, as Yelp’s nine-month-old payments platform evolves to fit a marketplace model.
Last year, Yelp hinted that it will expand far beyond food orders, with the ability to buy yoga classes and even dentist appointments. Yelp says it is “continuing to add new categories and partners in order to bring consumers more ways to transact directly on Yelp.” The company’s goals are clear and blunt.
Yelp shares that only a “select number” of salons and spas are on the Yelp Platform right now but that more will “roll out in the coming weeks.”
