Instant replay might be controversial in the sports world, but in games, most folk love getting a second look at their fleeting moments of greatness.
Mario Kart 8 is already driving its way to the top of Wii U’s sales charts, largely because it’s Mario Kart and every entry in that series is always fun (and profitable for Nintendo). Of course, while a lot Mario Kart 8 feels familiar, it does feature one new feature that’s surprisingly innovative for the often conservative Nintendo: Mario Kart TV.
Mario Kart TV instantly lets you view, edit, and upload a highlight reel of any race you finished. The videos appear on YouTube. The presentation is sleek and incredibly easy to use, and it hasn’t taken long for tons of Mario Kart replays have hit digital airwaves.
Of course, no one has time to watch every single video. That’s why we went digging and found a few of the best Mario Kart TV videos so far.
The Blue Shell Denial
Everyone hates the Blue Shell. It’s an item that immediately targets and hits whoever’s in first place, often changing the dynamic of a race immediately. Nothing is more frustrating than having a Blue Shell snap away your victory at the last second.
However, Mario Kart 8 introduced a new item, the Super Horn, which can actually destroy the Blue Shell right before it hits you. These videos below show how the Super Horn can save your victory seconds before crossing the finish line.
The Green Shell Skill Shot
We all love Red Shells, since they conveniently home in on the nearest target. Green Shells, however, fire in a straight line and bounce around until they either hit someone or get tired of their existence and explode.
Still, with a little skill, you can use the Green Shell to deadly effect. Just take a look at the video below, where Toad fires a Green Shell behind him, bounces it off a wall, and hits a target.
Sometimes, things just don’t go your way. Just look at this video, which fittingly stars the luckless Waluigi. Even though he has a Green Shell dragging behind him that should protect him from almost any attack, a Red Shell somehow manages to pass him, bypassing his defense, and then comes back around to hit him. Even with Mario Kart’s wonky physics, that doesn’t make sense.
Of course, to make it even worse, a lonely banana peel takes out Waluigi just a bit later.
The Cocky Catch-Up
This video features a smug Peach player who doesn’t move until Mario completely laps her, and her supposed hero even whacks her good with a long-distance Green Shell before passing by. But somehow, Peach manages to make up for the incredible disadvantage and still steal first place.
