Silent Hill: Revelation, the sequel to 2006′s Silent Hill movie, takes us back to the horrific resort town — this time following Heather Mason and the events of the game Silent Hill 3.

Director Michael J. Bassett crammed as much fan service into Revelation as possible, including characters, locations, creatures, and more.

Hardcore Silent Hill fans will also spot references to other games in the series, like Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2 and Travis Grady from Silent Hill: Origins, but I’m only focusing on Silent Hill 3 for this feature.

From the moment you board the marooned U.S.S. Sulaco to the daring escape from the musky moon of Acheron (aka LV-426), the amount of little background details that date back to the original Alien will make your chest burst with nostalgia. Compare the video game screenshots on top to the original film inspirations below.

Bishop’s remains

The xenomorph queen rips Bishop in half during the final minutes of Aliens, yet he still manages to save Newt from flying out of an open airlock. In Aliens: Colonial Marines, you’ll find Bishop’s lower half inside the Sulaco‘s cargo bay. Shouldn’t those legs be floating in space along with the queen?

Sulaco crew’s lockers

Take a close look at the lockers inside the Sulaco and you’ll see the names of the crew on them along with their respective ranks. Corporal Hick’s locker is open, but it doesn’t have a poster of a naked woman on the door like in the movie. Boo!

USCM poster

A USCM (United States Colonial Marines) poster hangs on a wall inside the Sulaco. It’s the same emblem that Lieutenant Gorman has on his sleeve, although it’s inverted for some reason.

Daihotai tractor

Once on LV-426, you’ll pass by an abandoned Daihotai tractor, the same one used by Newt’s family to investigate a crashed alien spacecraft.

M577 Armored Personnel Carrier

Besides the Jorden family’s Daihotai tractor, you’ll also see the M577 Armored Personnel Carrier that Gorman uses to transport the Colonial Marines from the Sulaco to the Hadley’s Hope colony. Try to ignore Bishop’s photobomb.

Hadley’s Hope colony

The road in Hadley’s Hope with the bar and grill neon sign doesn’t look as neat in the game as it did in the movie, but it’s still in pretty good shape considering the whole colony blew up in a 40 megaton explosion just 17 weeks earlier. …

The world of Dead Space is dark and dangerous, but a slow pace rewards curious explorers. Flashing a light on your surroundings may reveal hidden messages, bizarre background objects, and inside jokes from the designers.

Films based on video games (and vice versa) usually suck, but using game characters to recreate posters of popular movies works surprisingly well.

Take the image above, for example. I swapped the T. rex from Jurassic Park’s poster with Bowser, and the palm trees at the bottom with Super Mario World’s Valley of Bowser overhead map. Yoshi was my original choice since he’s a dinosaur, but King Koopa looks far more menacing.

Capcom announced a new title in the Devil May Cry series in 2010, and longtime followers of the franchise cried in agony when they learned it was a reboot and not a sequel. Dante’s new look alone (with short black hair instead of white) sent gamers into a furious frenzy — some going as far as boycotting the release.

Being an enthusiast of the demon-hunting saga myself and having played DmC in its entirety, I can put your fears to rest by saying developer Ninja Theory did not stray too far away from the formula that made Devil May Cry such a huge hit on the PlayStation 2. Hardcore fans have nothing to worry about.

Games don’t have to be based on movies or sports teams to feature real humans. As 3D rendering technology advances, more and more developers turn to flesh-and-bone actors, and models to give life to their protagonists and antagonists.

In the case of Far Cry 3′s Vaas Montenegro (top image), Ubisoft hired Canadian actor Michael Mando to portray, voice, and provide motion capture for the sadistic madman as well as star in promotional material. Vaas’s appearance (combined with Mando’s performance) give the title an extra layer of realism.

Capcom surprised its fans last month with the release of Street Fighter X Mega Man (SFXMM), a free PC downloadable game where the Blue Bomber battles blocky Nintendo Entertainment System-era versions of the World Warriors.

As fun and challenging as SFXMM is, the ultimate crossover title between these two franchises would be an epic fighting game. With over 100 characters to choose from, the amount of possible matchups and replay value would be staggering.

Roles for female video game characters are not exclusively reserved for princesses in distress or oversexualized bimbos. Strong, independent ladies like Samus Aran (Metroid) and Faith Connors (Mirror’s Edge) don’t need men to rescue them. Sadly, sexism is still a problem that affects every aspect of game design, including box art.

In a recent interview with VG24/7, The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann said that Sony asked him to focus on Joel (the male protagonist) for the game’s cover and push Ellie to the back. Everyone at Naughty Dog refused. Druckmann added: “I believe there’s a misconception that if you put a girl or a woman on the cover, the game will sell less.”

Irrational Games (formerly 2K Boston) released the official cover art for the highly anticipated (and often delayed) BioShock Infinite earlier this month, and fans were mostly disappointed with the final look.

While previous games in the series proudly display the creepy and iconic Big Daddy and Little Sister characters, Infinite shows the star, Booker DeWitt, in a generic “hero” pose. For a game set in a steampunk flying city full of mechanical menaces and sorcery, you’d expect a more inspired box art.

DeWitt’s boring pose and general design are so banal that you could stick him in any action game and he wouldn’t seem out of place — something you could not do with a Big Daddy. Check out the gallery below and see for yourself.

Tomorrow Corporation satiates your irrational impulse to set things on fire with Little Inferno, a chimney simulator available now for the Wii U and PC.

You use your virtual fireplace to burn toys, household appliances, school buses full of screaming children, and even the moon — just for the hell of it. As you incinerate garbage, new catalogs become available with even more crap to buy and destroy.

Burning certain items together unlocks special combos that reward players with extra money and postage stamps (which speed up shipping time on purchased goods).

The game provides hints as to what you should mix and match, but since pyromaniacs lack patience, we’ve made a list of every possible fiery combination divided between seven pages, one for each catalog. With 140 items to acquire and 99 different combos to discover, you’ll need all the help you can get.

Street Fighter II was such an extraordinary success that Capcom released five variations of it from 1991 to 1994. Gamers eagerly flocked to the arcades and swarmed video game stores looking for the latest update.

After the disastrous abomination that was the 1993 Super Mario Bros. live-action movie, my expectations of a decent silver-screen adaptation of Street Fighter II were depressingly low.

Still, I watched the film on its opening day (December 23, 1994) anyway, and as expected, it was a disaster. Horrible casting choices, a ludicrous plot, and laughable dialog made me hate myself for wasting money I could have spent at the arcade.

As a huge fan of Capcom’s fighting game series and a cinema aficionado (and a masochist, apparently), I recently acquired the Blu-ray version of Street Fighter (under $10!) and gave the flick a second chance 18 years later.

Maybe it’s because I’m still caught up in the excitement of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Street Fighter series, but I actually enjoyed bits and pieces of the wretched movie this time around. I am so stunned that I’m sharing with you 15 aspects of the film that didn’t trigger my gag reflex.

When you think of horror-themed video games from yesteryear, titles like Splatterhouse, Castlevania, and Clock Tower probably come to mind. Demons, vampires, and serial killers are scary, but they’re nothing compared to the nightmarish beings from Alien Storm.

For those of you who have spent time with Sega’s action game (it’s on Wii’s Virtual Console and part of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection), you know how disturbing Alien Storm is. If you’ve never played it, well, let me walk you through it.

It’s another sunny day in Segatown, and a high-tech hot dog wagon (inexplicably named “Alien Burgers”) once again blocks traffic to serve customers, which consist mostly of twins and wandering orphans.

Suddenly, the fast food dealers receive an emergency call — aliens are attacking the city! The guys from Alien Burgers turn out to be professional extraterrestrial-killers called Alien Busters. Did you see that coming? I sure didn’t.

Meet the fearless Alien Busters: wiener-handlers by day, eradicators of foreign species also by day.

The galactic travelers’ plan to conquer Earth is clever: They disguise themselves as everyday objects like garbage cans, phone booths, oil drums, and vending machines. Brilliant — except they do a piss-poor job executing it.

They even attempt to cover up their hideousness by dressing as humans and … other aliens. You’re doing it wrong, guys.

Judging by their physical appearance, I assume the otherworldly invaders came all the way from Uranus. Since the game’s instruction manual doesn’t reveal much information on these creatures, I will give them names according to their looks and behavior.

A. Flapjack: The lowest-ranked soldier of the alien army. Flapjack is as useless as a blind guide dog.

B. Clam E. Diaz: Cursed with having every venereal disease in the known universe, Clam lets off steam by wrapping his slippery tentacles around humans and rubbing them all over his puss-filled orifices. He also suffers from terrible rotten-egg burps.

C. Si and Am: Ill-tempered conjoined twins attached by the ass. No need to ask why they’re so cranky.

D. Flaccid Frank: Basically a pile of excrement with a sentient, dangling tongue. Hang in there, buddy!

E. Deplorable Derek: His commanding officer filled him with irresistible power-ups that only humans can use. Why?

F. Randy “The Ram” Robinson: Once an acclaimed wrestler in planet Suplexia, Randy is now sick, tired, funny-looking, and expendable.

G. Emeto Phil: His main attack is throwing projectile vomit at his victims. If that doesn’t work, he’ll literally hump you to death.

H. Gassy Gary: Part plant, part fire hydrant, all methane. Gary’s only offensive maneuver is ripping farts through his mouth and appendages. Or maybe those are anuses? Alien physiology is not my forte.
