New Super Mario Bros. 2′s coin fixation is confusing

Nintendo recently showed off how New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS is going to be all about the heroes getting paid, but something doesn’t quite add up to me. During the company’s software-showcase presentation during the recent 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, made a reference to players helping Mario collect one million coins but didn’t say why.

Do video games think I am stupid?

When I was growing up, my cousin — four years my senior — experienced some pretty horrendous sunburn. It was so bad that he was hospitalized. I can’t remember exactly how old I was at the time, but I am pretty certain neither of us had any idea what the hell a hole in the ozone layer was, so I can’t blame him. In fact, I thank him. The fact that he was hospitalized introduced me, for the first time, to video games.

If you’ve been living under a rock these last few weeks, you may have missed the Internet talking about DayZ, the current hotness among our somewhat strange cultural obsession with zombies. This mod for Arma II, created by Dean Hall (better known to the community as "rocket"), has been called "the zombie game we’ve all been wishing for" and "2012’s greatest story generator."

What it takes for me to play on “Hard”

I consider myself to be a "core" gamer, by which I mean that I would rather shoot things than farm things. I don't, however, consider myself to be a "hardcore" gamer, which means that my difficulty setting of choice has always been "Normal." I've never had a whole lot to prove in the skill department, and Xbox Achievements are not actually a huge draw here, contrary to my long, torrid history with them.
