Devil May Cry

The start of this year sure makes video games sound awfully violent doesn’t it? Last week we have the über violent Anarchy Reigns, and this week we’ve got this series reboot.

Devil May Cry (Xbox 360, PS3)

Think back to when the first Devil May Cry first came out for the PS2 way back in 2001. You there yet? Good. Now think of another game that’s even close to the like of Devil May Cry. You can’t can you. That game popularized the stylish action game, and a series was born. Funny thing about being the series that starts a trend. You either deviate from it in the name of evolution and change and risk overstepping causing the fans to riot in the streets as they march towards the developers or you stay exactly the same while implementing incredibly incremental changes to the game and risk stagnating causing fans to riot in the streets as they march towards the developers. In other words, I don’t envy long running series. Maybe this explains the reboot that is this Devil May Cry.

Devil May Cry 4, despite being critically well received, seems to have left most of its fans with a bad taste in their mouth, and no one seems to be looking forward to a sequel. Instead of making one, Capcom decided to partner with Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword, Enslaved) and reboot the series entirely starting by replacing the white haired protagonist Dante with Justin Bieber’s older, more badass looking brother also named Dante. Then they stopped. That’s not true of course. They did in fact change his family history a little bit, but nobody went to play any of the game’s series intent on learning more about Dante’s life or because of its compelling universe. Everyone comes in wanting to slice up demons, juggle them in midair with two handguns with magically infinite clips, and look good doing it. Based off the demos and previews, this reboot still has all of that with the only exception being that a western developer worked on it instead of Capcom.

Ninja Theory’s influence is best felt in Devil May Cry’s three-weapon system. Dante attacks normally with a sword when you push either of the two attack buttons, but that can be changed by holding down either the left trigger/L2 or the right trigger/R2. One changes Dante’s weapon to a scythe that deals light damage but hits everyone around him, and the other changes his weapon to a battle axe that deals heavy damage to one enemy.

Say what you will about the new look, but in reality, no one actually cares about Dante himself. We only know that the guy has a well of incredibly cheesy one-liners for every situation, and if the demo is anything to go by, nothing has changed in that respect. Everybody really only ever care about how cool they’re going to look this time around, and this reboot looks to offer exactly that.
