ZeniMax Online Studios’ upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, the elder scrolls online has already announced that it will require a $14.99 monthly subscription fee.
The gaming world is not the same place it was 10 years ago, as of now subscription-based games are hard to sell. There is a limited amount of people that see the value in it, and they are already playing WoW. Getting the rest of us to pay $14.99 a month is extremely difficult to say the least.
In my experience I wouldn’t play anything that costs more than $5 a month. I play a ton of games and paying $15 would mean I would have to miss one of the new releases every 4 months, and that doesn’t include the original price of TESO and whatever expansions they’ll release. If you are planning to play it on a console you are already playing for the online alone. I would much rather spend the money on steam sales. Don’t get me wrong an MMORPG like this most likely needs the money to keep adding interesting content to the game, but that is the reality as of right now. So is free to play the answer? , titles like LotRO and Guild Wars 2 have proven that you can make it work. I think the real question is if Bethesda is willing to change their policy.
We just have to wait and try the game out, I’m a huge fan of The Elder Scrolls franchise and I hope the game makes it, if the core experience of Skyrim can be played with people all around the world, if it brings new and exciting features to the MMORPG genre much like WoW did maybe $15 doesn’t seem like that much.
