The DeanBeat: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception tops our list of the 10 best games of 2011

This year, with our ramped up our GamesBeat review team, we’ve taken our Game of the Year choices much more seriously than we have in the past. We asked our reviewers to select the semifinalists and then picked the final winners ourselves. But our vote on the best game of 2011 ended in a tie, so we had to hold a tie-breaker round to pick our winner.

And the final tie-breaker vote went — for … Continue Reading

The DeanBeat: Movie-like “set pieces” score big sales for video games

With games like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Fortune sweeping us off our feet this holiday season, gamers  are getting spoiled by video game “set pieces.” These are the crazy, over-the-top, movie-like action scenes that make your jaw drop. Like when Nathan Drake gets in a firefight on a cargo airplane with the ramp open and everything is being sucked out of the plane. As a player, you’re trying to get a bead on somebody shooting at … Continue Reading

Review: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 packs enough action for 10 war movies

Editor’s note: This review contains some story spoilers.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 delivers what it promises for gamers. It’s an epic first-person shooter combat game with all of the drama and action of a Hollywood war movie. Because the developers solidly executed their mission for the third time running, this game will likely be one of the biggest-selling titles of the year. I’ve played it through and it didn’t disappoint me. To me, … Continue Reading

Review: Battlefield 3 is EA’s biggest fumble since Medal of Honor

Battlefield 3 is easily the most important holiday release for Electronic Arts. All year the publisher has aggressively hyped the DICE-developed sequel as a Call of Duty-killer, and with Modern Warfare 3 still two weeks from release, EA has the vital first-to-market advantage. Although EA seems to have bet the farm on this title, analysts still expect Modern Warfare 3 to outperform Battlefield 3 by a 2:1 margin. Last year’s Call of Duty game, Call … Continue Reading

Infinity Ward leader describes replacing “killstreaks” with “pointstreaks” in Modern Warfare 3 (video)

Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Activision Blizzard‘s Infinity Ward studio, says the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 coming on November 8 has better balanced multiplayer combat than ever before.

The new tweaks for multiplayer could make or break the experience. If they work, then Modern Warfare 3 can continue Activision’s reign as the leader of the first-person shooter combat genre, which generates billions of dollars a year.

One of the things Call of … Continue Reading

Hands-on with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer

Last night, I took out dozens of enemies in a few rounds of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer combat.

But as usual in these multiplayer death matches, the human enemy players took me out more, shooting bullets at me at 60 frames per second. It was my idea of wholesome, first-person shooter fun, even if the score came out lopsided.

Activision Blizzard, the biggest independent video game publisher, allowed the press to get … Continue Reading

The best games of E3 2011

The best games of E3 2011

We saw lots of video games at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles last week.

Some of them were pretty awesome.

There are a lot of big games here that are … Continue Reading
